Dunx posted up this in the news:-
http://www.snowboardclub.co.uk/news-10659.html
Quote:
The 2011 ski season has begun in the southern hemisphere, with a 600m long slope at Afri-Ski (www.afriski.com) in Lesotho the first to open, on Thursday, June 9th. Skiers and snowboarders who weren’t already resident at the ski area had difficulty reaching it though as access roads were closed by drifting snow. The ski area itself reported snow depths of 50cm thanks to 30cm off natural snowfall and over 150 hours of pre-season snowmaking.
so i thought i'd share a couple of snaps with you that my oke's in SA sent me.... I should be there in a couple of weeks so can't wait.... |

Hi Branny,
An interesting and timely post for me.
For family reasons, I am relocating back to Mauritius early next year. From a snowboarding point of view it is a near disaster. All major snow resorts are thousands of miles away whether it is the Alps, Chile, Aus/NZ or even worse North America! Afriski is somewhat closer. Researching it, it seems small, dependent on artificial snow and difficult to get at (any public transport?) But then Afriski is better than nothing.
I see that you know the place well. I'd like to know if it would be worth to take a 4 hrs flight from Mauritius to go to SA and then the 5hrs travel to the resort??
Cheers. |

It depends on your definition of worth it....
I was driving the 19hr each way trip from Cape Town a couple of times a season and then a couple of flights to Jo'burg and then getting lifts.
The resort is small by European and US standards, with only one main hill, a good terrain park and fairly basic facilities (don't expect wifi etc)... however the scene is tight, a great bunch of riders, the manager of the resort also owns the snowboardshop and is the snowboard club chairman so it's all really rider organised.
Although the snow cover from natural sources cannot be guaranteed the snowmaking is world class, and July is pretty much guaranteed snow coverage on the piste as it remains cold enough to blow in more snow.
There's usually two comps in July (Kings cup & SA Champs(QuikSnow)) if you can get cheap tickets, get in early with the accomodation (the range from backpackers to the best lodge is huge) then it's well worth a long weekend.... add a few extra days for a surf trip down to durban and an elephant back safarai in Addo and it becomes a real adventure.
I still run my junkyard blog (link below) which I keep updated with info from my team riders and also the snowboarder club site (also below)
mail me branny (at)junkyarcrew.com if you want any extra info etc |

Thanks.
Combining riding/skiing with safari and sightseeing may be something I could sell to the wife as a proper 'holiday'! |
