Post subject: working as maintenance abroad???

Anyone done this? I've applied for the position and have got an interview in July!
But I was at the natives job fair Saturday and speaking to one person he seemed to think that you are on call 24/7 incase anything goes wrong. Is this right?
Obviously I'm all for working over there but I don't want to lose out on free time to spend with mates and meeting up with people.
He said in terms of boarding time you don't get certain times of the day to go like a schedule but you will just find the a couple of hours here and there through out the week to board.
Don't want to end up being stuck with a job where I don't have time to enjoy the trip.
This is my first season abroad so am being a bit cautious.

| From what I understand it depends from company to company and also your location. Some have the maintenace person based in one resort and only covering that, others have you based in one resort but visiting others to carry out maintenace there. Have you had a look on the Natives forum? Chances are there'll be more people on there that have done maintenace. |

| Im doing maintenance this coming season, for a small company but the job also includes on mountain hosting as well so it means im guaranteed a reasonable amount of hill time. I dont doubt for a second that ill end up covered in the contents of an exploding french toilet on several occasions at godawful hours of the day but i care not. id say make sure they are explicit at the interview as to exactly what the hours are. Ultimately every company knows youre going there for th snow and the exploding toilet is just a means to an end so its not an unreasonable ask. |

| to a certain degree, its luck of the draw (not specifically in maintenace) I know a number of people who have been told one thing but the reality was very very different... |

| Hosting hill time is a lot different to your own hill time. I ended up doing a days hosting this season due to injury and was absolutely knackered by the end of the day. Mind you part of that was also due to the fact I was up early to prep and then as soon as I got back from hosting threw myself in the shower quickly, got changed and then did evening service. |

thanks all, have asked on the natives site 
another question :-
How strict are they on clean driving licences?? Most seem to ask for clean driving for at least 3 years. does this mean either
1. Have driving license for at least three years and should have never had points
or
2.have a driving license and it be clean for the last 3 years
I have a driving license for over 5 years and it will be clean 3 years come september. |

yeah i imagine it is, im not doing evening service etc, and tbh my job in thr uk last january involved digging the remains of a flattened house out of a 2m deep footing in mud and rain, so ill take the hosting!!
for me, its mainly aobut the surroundings and the occasional day off, that will do me just fine. |

It depends completely on what company your going out and doing it with and were you are places.
Some of the maintenance guys had it easy staying in just one resort and got a fair amount or mountain time, but i know others that had to look after 3 or 4 resorts and for them they got very limited mountain time as they had alot of driving to do.
But do expect to get the odd call at silly hours, i know as a rep i had to call maintenance out a few time at the early hours of the morning. |

Iv worked maintenance for 2 years with crystal.
It really depends on your manager and what they get you doing and ofcourse what resorts your covering. I cover Tignes and Val so not too bad and i know the chalets well now.
Expect the first month to be manic and not as much hill time as the hosts as with the last month but other than that its all on you really. I tend to try and save work for white out days unless it is urgent then on those days when everyone is watching films i go round doing any jobs iv got lined up or do my trips down the hill for parts etc.
Pepople think maintenance do nothing and you do get a nice life but yes you can be called at any hour but your only allowed to do certain things, you may be called out to a boiler say but you yourself cannot do alot as your not insured.

just applies to a few companies and so far ive heard back from 1 and have an interview in july and thats with Mark Warner.
Am hoping to be based in Austria or France |

what sort of maintenance are yo doing?
we work 4 on 3 off, summer is 10 hour days then for the winter its 2.30pm untill 12.30am unless there a big job to do, then we stay until its done.
as for not doing much if nothing broken then 100% there will be somthing else to do |

| I just got confirmation and contract signed up despite having 3 points on my license, typical. Its been clean for nearly 18 years. Then i get an sp30 right before i need it clean |
