Well i don't think there will be much of the season left once i finish. It's 11 weeks starting from 11th January i think. By the time i'm done it'll pretty much be April. I thought i could go on a road trip to America with my new found snowboard buddies and take full advantage of my English accent with the ladies.

heya guys. unfortuntly i had to come home frm my season in fernie a bit early, but thought id tell u some stuff

firstly, id sack off going to banff (unless u wer going to buy a car), fernie is much better in my opinion.

secondly, you can easily find a job if you just turn up. they may not be great, but they are there (burger flipping Smile ) people this year who worked on the hill wer frequently getting laid off. the company wer really c*ntish about this in my opionon, didnt really giv a sh!t about you and would cancel your liftpass without any notice meaning you had to buy a new one at full price. no way would i work for them. if you did then janitor is a sweet job. u work 4 days, then 4 days off, then 4 nights (4-11ish) then 4 days off then back to 4 days.

waiters can get between 50 and 150+ dollers a night tips! not sure about bars, but your expected to tip just for the barmaid pulling your beer (obviously i never did!!!)

alternativly... dont get a job. i didnt work and survived easily. oh yeah, cans are really expensive. they come in coke size cans and the cheapest wer 6 for 9 dollers.

you dont need to do a nonstop course. if i was you i'd just buy your pass and flights when they go on sale, either book into a cheap hostel (the fernie hotela nd pub... $400 a month for private room) and do the 3 day course in feb for $300 level 1. you dont need a bus pass and would get laughed at if you bought one. either pick up a cheap car or just hitch!

not being anti nonstop or anything, but theres basicly a bit of a divide between them and other seasonaires. personally i never cared for this and couldnt of given a damn, but other people assume your a nonstopper if your english and if you explain your not then they will give u a nice long list of why they dont like non stoppers. its all BS... but its def there.

EVERYONE will tell u that the summer season is awesome, so i would def consider this and the inevitable roadtrip to the states when boooking your return flights.

fernie is awesome... even with the pretty poor season i had. def go Smile

Thanks Arby, thats exactly what I was after! I'd heard that the hill were getting rid of people during this season so was getting a bit worried but at least if there's jobs we'll be ok.

Can't wait to get back to Fernie, might end up staying for the summer too and then do roadtrip down the west coast before heading home.

You will be there early enough to get a job in one of the shops or restaurants... Aim for the sushi place for big tips! They are only open on evenings too which has obvious benefits!

people i knew wer getting jobs in december. pretty sure that theres more than enough jobs there. i personally woulnt get there b4 november. guess it depends just how much you need a job really.

a lot of the bars had $10 pitcher deals on certain nights, so its not really that expensive drinking out. cheaper than in the uk.

also, going out in fernie is wicked, dont listen to peole who say its quiet wiht just a few bars. its sweet

yeah about the hill sacking people... i cant remember the statistics but basicly there was never anyone on the hill whilst i was there because the snow was so irregular, so they didnt need the people to work. what i would have thought they'd do is lay you off but let you keep your pass if you satyed on a list which they could use when it got busy again.

they wer screwed over family weekend coz they had no staff and that was one of the 2 times it gets busy on the hill.

thats another thing.... the only time you will que is at christmas and family weekend where the max que time will be 5 min. apart from that you will never que. its sweet. you will also find yourself on completly empty piests quite often. its luvely!

Check these:

www.fernie.com/forums

www.ourfernie.com -> classifieds

We found our house from the first one. There is loads of accommodation here and plenty of people to share with. I would recommend coming late November and staying in the hostel where you'll meet people in the same situation. This is what most of the people i know did when they came to Fernie by themselves.

What Arby said about the mountain is true. I would not recommend working for them unless you are an instructor or work as a server or barman.

It always helps to sort these things early so start posting on the forums!

the fernie is wicked mate, i'd def recommend it. i had a double bed, chest of draws and a spare single in my room for $400 a month. my room was REALLY noisy on fridays and saturday nights (and i am the worlds deepest sleeper)... but tbh you should be out on theose nights most of the time anyway. the heatings also a bit dodgy, you'll either wake up cooking or frozen. best bet is to buy a fan heater when your there and stick it within easy reach of your bed.

apart from that, no complaints. its got cable tv, a hughe kitchen table, 2 stove tops and an oven, 4 sofas. tis really great.

sort it out in advance, i booked mine in october when they wer starting to fill up.

you canget some pretty cheap houses out in fernie too, but afraid i dont know much about them.

Banff is amazing too mind, Fernie is deep snow but Banff is SUCH a laugh its amazing. And if you're into park the three resorts lend themselves very well - Sunshine and Norquay have sick parks with kickers and rails, Norquay usually being the best there.. Theres night riding on a friday night i think at Norquay park too. The lake is unfortunately an RCR park and so is only rails, although to their credit they went and spent so much money on new rails that its worth going there just for that. Plus the lake has some good bowls despite not having the healthiest levels of snow out of the three resorts.

Plus with a BUNAC visa you can stay wherever you want in Canada for the whole 12 months theres no moving on necessary.
