Hey,
Know its kinda early to be thinking about next season when this season's only just beginning but starting preparations for doing next season in Fernie or Banff, esp since it'll be the Olympics.
Already been to fernie last season for 10 days and totally loved the place but also considering Banff. If there's anyone who's done a season in either it'd be good to hear from you as well as people who are thinking about doing the same as me.
Planning on doing BUNAC so getting everything ready for applications when they open for non-students in Dec, if accepted gonna head over early Oct, do season and then head to Vancouver or Calgary for the rest of the visa.
So now I've finished goin on, it'd be great to hear from anyone who's done seasons in Banff or Fernie or anyone who whose planning on goin!
Cheers guys |

Banff is awesome.
I did the 2001- 2002 season. Only slight hassle is getting the bus to the slopes, but other than that its awesome.
Then again- fernie is the pow pow capital for canada- would be sick to ride there. Why not start in Banff, then look to do Fernie for february onwards? With the Bunac visas you cant stay in the same place for too long anyhow can you?? |

Hey
It’s never too early to start thinking about a season, I'm thinking of Banff to for the 09/10 season too. Can’t decide between there and whistler though. I’m thinking Banff might be less hassle with accom and stuff but as I’m doing a road trip up the west coast to Vancouver, Whistler would be closer and I’m getting there early Oct anyway. I know with Bunac you can work for any employer for the full 12 months if you want though. Banff/Fernie does sound cool. I just can’t decide!! |

Fernie was amazing when I was there on holiday last season, we got so much pow when were there and its a really laid back vibe in the town with some great pubs. I could see myself there for 6 months and the people were bang on but Banff would be amazing because of the national park. Me & my other half did think about Whistler as it is epic but with the olympics and the shortage of accomadation this season we're thinking otherwise.
Been looking at cost of living and renting, it seems to cost the same in both Fernie and Banff but was chatting to someone who rented a house in Fernie with 4 other people that she met on a bus from vancouver for $400 a month which doesn't seem too bad.
Decisions, decisions! |

Im thinking about Fernie for next season. I went to Banff last Christmas and even though it is a beautiful town with two good resorts (Sunshine and Lake Louise) I think the ride to the resorts would get to me over a full season. With Fernie I think it is a similar town and bus ride to the resort but the bus ride is only 10 mins (correct me if im wrong).
I would love to do a full season in Whistler but with the Olympics I don't think i could get there early enough to guarantee accommodation. |

It is only a ten minute bus ride and the buses are really regular, we hitchiked the first day with a lad we met in the hostel and if I was there for a season I'd definately do that or maybe even buy a cheap car if I was working on the hill, the ride to the hill goes so fast cause your so excited about your first run and the ride home your buzzing from a great day.
How long is the bus to the resorts? |

Norquay is only about 10-15 mins. Sunshine is about 25mins and Lake Louise is about 40mins.
Its pretty cool bus ride to Sunshine, as you can sometimes get to see some wildlife. We saw a grizzly on the way in once, along with some massive Bull Elks!!
And the bus beats walking a mile or so in your gear after a days riding, back to your apartment/ hotel.
Go and work for Banff Park Lodge and you will get some of the best staff accom in town!! |

My personal PROS and CONS for Fernie, Banff and Whistler (not that there are very many cons to a ski resort!)
Banff:
PROS -
3 resorts to choose from
Lake Louise - one of the best in Canada
Set in a National Park - stunning scenery
Very pretty town, lots to do, great restaurants and bars
Great night life
CONS -
A long drive to each resort; Norquay 15mins, Sunshine 20mins and a 20min gondola ride, Lake Louise 40mins
Quite touristy
Fernie:
PROS -
Phenomenal amounts of powder
Challenging terrain
Some of the best tree runs in the world
Chilled out, laid back town
Great bars, pubs and restaurants
Super friendly town
Minimal to no queues and empty slopes
CONS -
No terrain park (only a rail park) - However the terrain there gives you plenty of opportunity to play; tons of natural lips and jumps.
Whistler:
PROS -
It's Whistler; everything is on your doorstep!
Great terrain, shops, food and accommodation.
CONS -
Busy, crowded slopes and queues
Touristy
Expensive
I hope that helps! |

Great post!
I've just arrived in Vancouver, and trying to make my mind up between doing the season in Banff or Fernie .. and think you summed up exactly what I've arrived at myself.
I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of kickers at Fernie, but think that's where I'll end up as it seems everyone who's been there loves it. |

Guys you've all been great with the posts, it makes me feel loads better that others are starting to think about next season and its not just me being a bit of a geek!
I reckon if there's enough of us going we should try and keep the post going like the Whistler one so as we've all got someone to celebrate visa acceptance, moan about cost etc...
Maddogdave, try fernie.com for stuff to do with rooms/houses for rent, they've got a section in their forum dedicated to it and you get alot of locals putting ads for rentals or looking for housemates to fill houses. The Raging Elk does season long stays, I stayed their for ten days last season andit was spot on but dunno what it'd be like for a season. The Fernie which is a budget hotel also does season stays. You'll love fernie its is amazing! |

Well actually the plan at the moment is splitting the season between Canada and Colorado or maybe Utah... I want to sample some of that champagne
Im hoping to save up so I dont have to work Does anyone know how long a Canadian tourist visa is? And also can you cross into the states with it?
Cheers!
