I went a couple of years ago with my girlfriend when she was just starting to learn. IMO Heavenly is not too good for learners, but Sierra@Tahoe was excellent for getting your feet in.

In general I found the whole area to be fantastic, and had a great time. There are soo many hills around the lake, that I can't wait to go back again and try all the others (we only rode the two mentioned above).

We also spent a few days in San Francisco before driving upto to Tahoe. SF is a great city (and I don't like cities), very laid back atmosphere. I highly recommend going to Alcatraz on one of the tours. Also by staying in the city i was able to rest after the flight; I would not have liked to have done the drive upto Tahoe straight after getting off the plane; about 6 hours as it was snowing quite heavily for the last qtr of the journey.
