Post subject: Helmet camera's + Recorder

Anyone have any experience of these looking into purchasing one for next season so starting research early
I ride mainly big mountain or backcountry so would want a wide angle lense and pref one which i can see what i recorded
From what i gather resolution needs to be 640+ for it to be worth it, prob looking at spending £200-300 but 6 months to save so..... |

i used an archos pmp and the helmet cam that they sell as an accesory. The quality was pretty good, and caputured the action shots pretty well. But i wouldnt recomend it as a good device to use.
Your first choice you need to make is what media are you recording it on to, is it going back to a camcorder or onto flash card.
i think theres a web site called action cam or something that has loads of these things on |

After speaking to friends looking at reviews, clips online and speaking to "techies" i think im going to go for

Good deals on ebay but the addition of walkie talkies may come in handy for next season
Any further input would be halpful especially if anyone has any experience of the above product but it was also featured on C5 gadget show a while ago which is an endorsement on its own |

| I have one of the ATC2000 cameras and it is OK. Not brilliant though. The video quality is ok sound is rubbish but what is really good is that it is self contained and you can get about 1 hour of video on a 2GB SD card at its best resolution. However it is not a patch on a separate bullet cam and hard drive/cam corder set up. |

| i'm just worried about the contrast as I will be in Val Thorens were there are no trees or rocks so its all pretty much white, wondering if an amber filter would help? |

I was just about to start a thread asking about helmet cams when I saw this one.
I had one of the ATC2Ks and thought it sucked, the picture quality was a bit crap and the sound is pretty bad as well. I had done a bit of reading up on it so knew that the sound was going to be poor.
The thing is also quite heavy, not stupidly heavy but I found when I had it around my head with the strap it wobbled about a bit. I could also not find a goggle attachment for it which is what I would prefer.
I am currently looking at the Archos 405 with the helmet cam. Has anyone had any experience with these or any of the other Archos range? I have seen videos on the net and the quality looks much better than the ATC2k.
Dinalli, why would you not recommend it? |

| call mark at www.dogcamsport.co.uk best gear at best price , i use them on my snow board helmet my car race helmet and i run 4 cams at once in my race car .......has specific snowboard kits , stored direct ont our hard drive , no messing with cards etc , double up as a mp4 plus video recorder , music etc .........then u wont need or want to upgrade next year , well worth the money |

why would you pick a helmet cam over a reguler cam?
they just produce shaky poor quality images??
and you cant really see whats going on..
only purpose i see is as a second angle on big big mtn lines. |

Not really comfortable holding £300+ worth of kit in my hand hurtling down a big mountain @ a million k's or in the park in fear i will fall and smash the f**ker! - Cause I will!!
Also no real need for a camcorder any other time, my bro bought one and has used it like twice in 3 years!! |

| i put a cam on the nose of my board and one on my helmet , easy to switch view on view on recorder , chaeper to replace and when hiring out , makes m e money , also use a hand held recorder , no diff in quality AT ALL , each to there own though ( mu opinions not that of everyone ) |

You can pick up a decent miniDV camcorder that will do the job off ebay 2nd hand (must have both AVin and out connection though) to use with a decent helmet cam setup and it gets wrapped up in a cosy fleece in your backpack anyway. Do a search on this topic, theres a few long threads on this with plenty of info but watch out using hard disk DVR type recorders (ie Archos etc), they can't process images as fast as a camcorder can so when it records you hurtling down a slope the picture can become jarred and stuttery. Plus they have been known to not like the cold, a lot.
I got the ICE cam from cameras4sports.com and its been spot on. You get the boarders eye view hurtling down the slopes without having to hold on to any equipment plus when you are in the park you can just unplug it and use the camcorder on its own to film your mates wipeouts, easy! |

| the new ones from dogcam have built in anti vibration , i use them in my race car , which is basically nearly soild , perfect pics every time , perfect picture even when i have crashed and burned and alot smaller than a camcorder.....but each to there own, as for the cold never ever had a problem ........maybe just been lucky ?? |
