I am thinking of buying a big board for powder days. I currently ride a 163 all round board which is fine in powder, but maybe want to pick up a real monster freeride board just for pure backcountry.
So now I am wondering how much bigger to go. Is it possible to have a powder board thats too big? And what are the disadvantages of going bigger?
I am currently looking around the 175 - 185 range. If anyone has experience of riding big boards, is this the kind of range you think I should be looking at? Too big? Or could it be worth going even bigger?
Any advice or general thoughts appreciated. I am a solid and experienced rider, but I've never riden bigger than 163 so not too sure what to expect. |

depending on how big you are the boards could be too big for you. |

why not try the same size board but get one of those new SKATE BANANA boards. they bent the opposit way to a normal board making it glide through pow so easy! never tried one myself but hurd good things about it!

Yh they supposed to float real good and apparently you can get a board which is a bit smaller than your norm... The whole of next seasons lib tech range features banana tech and mtx and i've heard really amazing things about it... I mean lib tech arent the only people doing this, K2 have implemented a rocker on 3 of their boards (Gyrator (pow), Turbodream (all mtn), WWW(jib)). Erm, signal also have a rocker for next season as do never summer on three of their boards...
And if pow is what you're going for then Ive heard the gyrator is SICK but the skate banana is supposed to be able to rip on the pistes and in the park but still float like crazy in pow... |

so what would be the problem with going bigger?
It doesn't seem worth the hassle riding 2 boards if you're only looking at a 5cm difference between them. |

i dont see the point in buying a board bigger than a 65 unless your riding like 50 days a year of like 2 feet of fresh.
a all mountain 160 is plenty big enough for anything but the deepest of deep
and if you get a fish or swallow tail then a 160 will handle anything. |

I think you youngsters nowadays are all just a bunch of pussies. Us old schoolers remember the days when people were riding 2m+ boards in AK. |

that is a powderboard.
i got it off ebay for 250e! new! bargain.
had i not got that i'd have got one of these, if i had the money anyway www.swellpanik.com them boards are the nuts.
a 175 to 185 would definately not be too big for you.
i am 5'4" tall and normally ride a 156 (which is fairly long anyway) my o'sin swallow tail is a 168 which for me is the perfect hight.
it rides like a dream, on piste it doesn't really feel any different from my board (apart from first few turns, then it home running) but off piste and in powder it really comes into its own. its just floats through everything, where all the others have gone back to piste early for fear of sinking, i just glide straight throug.
best buy i think i've ever got!
as to not being able to go backwards, well you can a little bit if you get stuck and have to go a little backwards. I even ride trees on mine with no bother, you just learn to look more carefully before you get into silly situations!
there is a freestyle swallow board,('ll search for the link now) which is a bi-directional swallow which rides like a normal board on piste. cant remember the name right now will go search.
I'm told by various pro's here that its an awesome board. I didn't have the pleasure before buying my swallow but they're massive and i think too long for me.
Try and go test a swallow tail, just for the experience! |
