Not your usual insurance question - well sort of.
I am going away for a 5 day trip and need to get extra insurance cover as I have already used up my 17 days winter cover from my main policy.
Looking at some of the policies around I have realised most are fairly crap for equiptment cover unless its brand new. My board, boots and binding are all 3-4 years old (but still in very good nick, working great)
Looking at the policies due to their age I will get hardly anything back - definitely not enough to replace them. So far I have found
OUL Direct
30% 3-4 years old
20% 4-5 years old
10% 5+ years old
InsureAndGO
Over 60 Months = 0%!
SCUK Insurance
Up to 4 years old - 30% of purchase price
Up to 5 years old - 20% of purchase price
Over 5 years old - Nil
While I don't expect full price for the stuff, I expect a chunk to be able to replace it especially as most of the stuff is only used for 1/2 weeks a year but could last 10/20 weeks!
So anyone know of any companies with some better rates? |

| It's not going to happen I'm afraid. Check the resale value of a 4/5 year old board on ebay and you'll realise why. They're paying you the value of the equipment lost, not the cost of replacing it. |

IMO its complete of a cop out from the insurance companies - Many household insurance policies now will payout for a replacement item as good as what has been lost/stolen.
The whole point of insuring something is such that if it gets stolen you can replace it with something similar.
The % are a joke as you could have a £500 board which you have used for 3 weeks (1 week a year) and some policies they say its worth nothing yet its still worth hundreds and would cost hundreds to replace even buying 2nd hand. |

Can you not claim on household insurance?
Prob need to check the small print...
I got my purse and camera stolen a few weeks back and insurance company paid me back for cost of replacing (including my SCUK card!!)
Guess if you add your board etc onto household then it would be covered? |

I agree. If you lose a 4 year old board, they'll give you the money to replace it with another 4 year old board.
Whilst *some* (read "expensive") household policies have new for old clauses, you need to check the small print of those too.
If I had a 4 year old car and it was stolen, I certainly wouldn't be expecting the money back to buy me a new car. |

| I have come to the conclusion holiday insurance with winter cover is to pay for your helicopter ride if it all goes tits up on the mountain. The value of your board is small compared to that potetial claim and that is what you are really getting the insurance for. Think about it if a compnay was going to stump up full RRP for an old board then folk would be loosing one every couple of years just so they could get the latest seasons offerings |

I am agree 100% they should not have to replace it with a new board but the %ages that a lot of the insurance companies are using means you will struggle to find anything near the value they give you i.e. my 3-4 year old setup
Vans Fargos (approx £110 new at the time)
Option Makinnen (Approx £280 as old season stock)
Burton Missions (approx £100ish)
So lets say £500 worth. A majority of policies will give you back 30% of less i.e. £150. Even on the second hand market that is not going to get you anything like replacements. |

only real reason i get insurance is for the medical side of things, like evacuation and medical bills. i therefore pick my insurance on the best cover for this including off piest, everything else is a bonus.
im very carefull with my gear (im sure everyone is) and just hope mine never gets nicked. its either always in sight or i stick a massive bike lock through the bindings and put it in a place which would proove a right b!tch to get it out. |

At least it covers it, my insurance doesn't cover valuables or anything valuable for that matter (not in regards to equipment) - definately read the small print before you take out insurance!! |
