Hello all
I'm seriosuly keeen on going to Whistler for a season next winter (3 months). just wondering if anyone from the south-east is seriosuly considering it too? thought if there are others about we could talk and stuff before hand etc?

I've applied to Tui to do the whole season with first choice Canada. Prob won't know much more till May coz that's when they start their big recruitment drive. Not totally set on that idea though, could be persuaded to do 3 months Ad Hoc....as it were!! lol
What you got in mind??

| i was thinking of doing 3 months in Whistler with Seasonnaire, it will be a non-working season so i can ride every day! you can do it with them for about £2500 and can survive on about a grand spending mone yso £3,500 all together. probably wanna do dec-feb or jan-mar. |

| I'm in Whistler this season and it has been awesome and there is still just over a month to go! I'm staying in a condo in Creekside and today i have just told my landlord that i will deffo be wanting it next season. I'm coming out on the 19th of November '07 and going back on the 1st of May '08. Today was my 99th day on the hill in Whistler/Blackcomb and i've ridden 10 days in other resorts around B.C on a roadtrip. I can't recommend being a snowboard bum highly enough. |

I'm in Whistler too. You may not want to do a course - so i'm not ramming it down your throat. Whatever you go for, I definitely reccommend not working if you possibly can. Work and save like mad and it before you go and it will be so worth it. You get guys coming out and working and they only end up riding 1 day a week. Let's hope like another season like this one!!!
If you are into touring and you do get out to Whistles - get in touch - there are some great options.

| Is there a lot of people who go out and do a season on their own? i guess i'll meet people pretty quick but just wondered if its common for people to travel out their alone? |

i went out last year with one other mate, and I made quite a few friends just through the accom I was in and chance meetings. It kinda depends on how sociable you are.
I would say that if you didn't save up enough I can definately recommend being a lifty. That's where I made most of my friends - theres such a big crew that you can go out every night of teh week if you want. And because you get a free lift pass, that's about a thousand bucks in your pocket, and you get to snowboard every day if you want to. And trust me, riding with the other lifties is seriously good fun. I'm not too bad a rider, but I improved so much trying to keep up with them. Especially the Quebecois. I was always going straight trying to keep up with them whilst they were spinning 5's off tiny little bumps! |

Hey...
I'm really envious of all you guys that are out there this season! I've booked with seasonit for 5 months from dec 1st so only 8 months to snowbum heaven, ha!
How much spends would you guys say you'd need per month?
And how easy would it be to get a job as a liftie? Do you need a work visa or can you do it on the sly?

You won't get a job working for the mountain on the sly; it is far too big a company and has far too many applicants with visas to even consider hiring someone without a visa. Same goes for all the bigger employers in whistler, the hotels, the IGA etc.
You might be able to get some cash in hand jobs in some of the smaller independent places but I'd be careful pimping yourself out too much; if you get caught you'll be asked to leave canada and won't be allowed back in again.
Last season I survived on about £200 a month which is about the absolute bare minimum I think you could get away with. About half of all that went on food and other living costs, not leaving much for anything else especially when I broke a pair of bindings and ripped my jacket; the replacements also came out of that money. |

Definately a no-no trying to work without a visa - not really worth the risk
Apart from getting a visa it is pretty easy getting a lifty job. The mountain takes on pretty much anyone who can spell their name, and they have all sorts of jobs to choose from. Pretty bad pay, but free pass, discounts on mountain food (Or free if you make friends with the right people), discounts in most shops through town.
Other employers tend to pay more. And also as a lifty you don't get tips. Well, I got given a sweetie once, but apart from that. |

Cheers for the advice ace & deinzen, i had a feeling a visa would be reqd to work, but its always good to hear it from those who have been there and done it.
looks like i'll just have to save like crazy bananas before heading out!! |

Hi there,
I'm also considering doing Jan-march next yr in whisler. I live down in London at the mo. I've been up to MK a few times, not bad but off to tignes in a couple of weeks can't wait. Not sure which company to go with at the moment, but do like the sound of a big chalet so you can meet lots of peeps. |

no need to sign up for everything they offer although for £160 you can get a 1 year working visa and they dont generally run out like the standard ones have . Also provide a address for post so you can set up that elusive canadian bank account before you get there
No need to plan where to work in advance and you can just rock up to the jobs fair in novemeber or just spend your time molesting the local bar staf until you run out of money and have to get a job, all adds to a very relaxed schedule.
the idea of workin 6 days a week as a chalet bitch again makes me wanna cry into my compote of red cabbage.
p.s £=$$$$$$$ saving in the uk will go twice as far as money earnt out there.
word.
p.p.s anyone got a floor that me and a mate can sleep on? |
