Travelling from South Cumbria to Scotland next friday. Not to sure which west side resort to try. How long a drive from Glencoe to Nevis and is it worth the extra drive or will Glencoe give us a day of fun boarding. we are all beginner to intermediate standard.Doing a day round trip thats why we were thinking Glencoe. Any thoughts much appreciated. |

Bullsh*t!
Word in the media is "Global warming this... global warming that.... Golbal warming is killing the Scottish ski resorts." People pick up on this and think its not worth going when the opposite couldn't be further from the truth. Most folk on the West coast are getting fresh tracks in 4-5" of snow over night, with Glencoe and Nevis holding the most snow they've had for a few seasons.
Saturday 15th March - Nevis Range Back Corries
They ain't going anywhere soon and Cairngorm, Glencoe and Nevis will easily make it through to the May bank holiday with lift served skiing. In fact, Nevis are holding a Slopestyle comp next Sunday (20th April)
"Word on the street" is a mid summers day session could be on the cards this year... but you won't find that in the main stream press.
Cairngorm, the Lecht and Nevis have year round activities to secure their future. In fact Cairngorm and Nevis could easily survive on summer activities alone.
Rant over |

It's cool... it's just something that gets my back up when folk pick up rumors like that and pass them on. (And also the fact I've been stuck in work all day receiving picture messages from the slopes).
The season isn't going to end anytime soon. It'll be lack of interest that'll force Cairngorm, Glencoe and Nevis to close this year and not lack of snow. In fact it's been like that for the last 2 or 3 seasons.
And yes I live in Scotland... how did you guess? |

LOL because your proud of your country
Yea I was up hmm about 4 weeks ago bloody mountaineering , all I wanted too do was board ! But I was with school and had no choice . We couldn't even get to the top of munro's coz they were snow bound .
I know what you mean though , I wish I could get up but (a) I have no money (b) no car yet (c) Just had an operation . But as soon as December comes round I'll be up for a proper season + I'll be able to drive and be fully fit |

All the forums have been raving about Scotland this winter, especially the last few weeks, the word EPIC has been used regularly...
check the webcams, read the forums, i don't think you'll have any problems for next Friday. Can't really advise which resort to visit, though i think Nevis is a better bet, i think its higher... but since you are doing a day return... i dunno... have fun though! |

| Thanks for the feedback so far. The weather forecast i have seen has pointed towards winds and clouds for friday so if the weather seems something like ok as i travel through glencoe may stop there and save nevis for future. Got to admit both look far more impressive than i had ever imagined just remember tales of frozen windy nightmare days from kids at school who used to travel up in the distant past. |

The snow conditions at the moment are great and the forecast is not for a thaw in teh imminent future so the conditions will last well into next week.
These guys try and keep the weather/lift status updated daily so worth keeping an eye on it. Anything over 50mph winds generally close the lifts.

If you've beginners with you who are not that confident on button tows (to access most of the slopes its a button up at the Coe) then I would head the 45 mins or so up the road to Nevis if you can, at least then there is the chairlift you can use to access just about all the blue runs or traverse to the rob roy t-bar to get up to the plateau for the park and red runs down. |

Im planning a trip to Nevis, either Saturday or Sunday.
How busy is it likely to be on Sunday with the competition?
Quite excited about getting some snow in at last. Its been a long time since Canada!
