Not been boarding abroad before so looking to go away this coming winter.
I would like to stay in Europe for my 1st trip so can anyone say when is a better month to go in historically?? I know nobody can predict what the wheather will do but when usually is a good month?
Also is it better to book now or wait and get a late deal?
Thanks |

Theres no months that are no good really and like you say its nearly impossible to predict too far in advance where teh good snow is going to be.
generally speaking (and I mean this is a really rough guide), December and January are the coldest months, Feb and March are a bit warmer with good snow conditions and april is spring conditions.
as far as resorts go...
Mayrhofen in Austria is a great place, loads of terrain, nice village and you can go to hintertux glacier for guaranteed snow.
Morzine / Avoriaz is a good place in france, huge area, good night life etc...
Les Arcs in France is great too, I've only ever stayed in 1800 which is pretty good.
People will reccomend tignes / val d'isere cos its a big area with glaciers and a good snow record, i didnt rate it tho.
I'm sure other people will recommend others
Its worth thinking about school holidays...both british and french half term school holidays are usually in Feb, but snow wise feb is usually good........and its not really worth going anywere over xmas holidays in my experience unless you like to queue a lot.
s'up to the individial really, you might hate somewhere I love, have a read around the forums, theres loads of peoples opinions on almost every resort going |

| Probably best to have a look around november/december time and then book when you want. |

I've usually booked my first trip by the end of september.
In terms of when - February's usually pretty decent for a mix of snow/cold, and if you do even a half decent job of checking out resorts on the intynet then you won't end up somewhere totally unsuitable.
Personally, I really enjoy courchevel in the three valleys, but then I'm slightly odd with no real personal grooming skills. |

I would wait and book around October time, usually thats when special deals seem to be on offer.
Try and avoid half term times not only for the UK but also for the country you are going to. For example the French half term lasts from end of 1st week in Feb to March depending on the region. The slopes will be busier then with the dreaded snaking doozer crocodiles of the kids ski schools!!
Think about what exactly you want from a holiday (i.e Ski in/out? that would rule out Mayrhofen as from the town theres only one gondola to get to the slopes in the morning (or a bus up the valley). Do you want lively apres ski, lots of pubs and clubs etc or just looking for the best area and not bothered with all the off the slope activities? Theres loads of websites out there with info on resorts just look around
Personally I rate, Les Arc, Flaine, Ischgl but don't like Chamonix or anywhere in Italy (full of obnoxious skiing italiano's!) |

| I am looking for some where that is ideally quite close to the slopes, if you can ski in out then that would be perfect but not essential. As far as the evening goes something going on is a bonus but am really going for the boarding! |

I went my first trip this year. Booked in October and went to Risoul the first week in January. It wasn't too busy and we were lucky with the snow conditions, snowed the week before we arrived, a couple of decent showers during the week and for the last day we had a 40cm overnight dump, fantastic riding fresh powder in the last day.
I would recommend Risoul as a resort but being my first trip I don't have anywhere else to compare it to. All of the accomodation is close to the base of the slope and Risoul is linked to Vars giving you a big ski area. Don't really know what the nightlife was like cos I was there with my 10yr old daughter so didn't get to sample it but there were a few younger people there and didn't seem to have many complaints. |

| I've just come back from Risoul on saturday and it was FAB...France's best kept secret. We had 4 feet of pow in 2 days!!! The place was practicaly empty, never qued for a lift infact very rarely saw any1 else on them and you'd be the only one on the slope mosta the time, nice selection of runs and some good opportunites for off pieste and pooowwww! Half decent park to and a half pipe in high season. I'll defo be goin back, night life wasn't great but enough! |
