Post subject: New K2 Darkstar,the board p-tex base is concave,should it be  PostPosted: Sep 10, 2008 - 09:57 PM

Hi again guys

Answer me this one!

I have just bought a new 2008-2009 157 K2 Darkstar.

I was looking at the base.
I thought i was going crazy!again, lol, but the board looked as if it was slightly dipping in the middle, concave,ie, side edge to side edge,it has a dip in the middle.
I got a straight rule out and put it across the board from side edge to side edge,i was right!
From about 2" in from each side wall there is a gap of about 2-3 mil.all the way along the middle of the board.
Should the base of a board not be total flat?

I know when your standing on the board it is raised in the middle but this is from tip to tail and when you stand on the board it should become flat.

I tried to use it for the first time, and could`nt swing the board, the edges totally dug in.
Could`nt turn the board to save myself.

The tech on the board says it has a 1 degree base bevel,i take it they mean, base edge bevel,or does it mean board base bevel.
I have read about when boards come out of molds they can be concave from side wall to side wall, this happens to about 1-10.
Is this what has happened here or is the Darkstar men`t to be concave like this and i cant ride this fecking board.
Please help me here guys as i took some bad falls the other day on the board and i am sh1t scared to go back on it...

Drew

I'm presuming that as you have bought a Darkstar you won't be planning on doing any racing. No FIS boarderx, slalom, etc?

Ok, well. Then it won't matter. I very much doubt it will be a warranty, most boards are mass produced and will not be completely perfect but take it back if you are unhappy. I bet if everyone on this forum checks out their base they will find defects. A flat base is only completely important if you are racing and where 100th of a second matter.

I can tell its you first board and treating it with kid gloves. I can also tell from you previous post you are over reading things on the net. Be very careful as if you do this your likely to get things done to you board you don't need. Like a base grind or the edges changed.

The fact that you can't spin it which I suspect you are doing on carpet is down to your inexperience.

Just go out use the thing and practice!!!

thanks for the reply snochick.
Its not on the carpet i was trying to spin the board,it was on the slop, snowzone.
As soon is i go flat on the board facing down at the bottom of the hill, which is quite flat,i am on my face.
Do me a fav and go read the link i had gave you on the first post.
The guy said it is important for swing to have a flat base, and to get the best out of your snowboard.
I know i am treating the board with kid gloves, lol, but dont want to round the edges off.
This is ok for rails ect but most of the riding i will be doing will be on the mountain,i dont see me doing many rails.

as you say,i just need to get on with it and stop being so technical about it,but i just want to get a good start to begin with.
I could ride snowzones boards no problem,so is it a case of buying the wrong board here.

thanks for your help

Drew

Just to get this clear are you saying the board is concave, so the edges are lower than your base if placed flat on the ground.

Gazza Gazza Gazza, thankfully at last someone has picked up on what i am trying to say.
Yes mate, thats right,( the edges are lower than your base if placed flat on the ground.)

I passed level1-5 in exscape with no problems at all.
I know i have just started snowboarding but i used to be in a skateboard team years ago and won a few comps so i have taken to snowboarding with no problem.
Everyone who has replied to my post, please go and read what it says about bases of snowboards and ski`s.
And read about the base being totally flat to give you swing ect
I will post the link next
