Supporting your local store is the right idea in theory and it is something to be encouraged but when it comes down to it economics take over. Also by that rule does everyone support their local non boarding shops, does everyone buy in their local fruit and veg store and butchers? Nope i bet most people go to Tescos.

And by the way, i never buy in my local store as they only sell the usual suspect, i.e anything made by Burton...first time i went in there they even tried to tell me that was the only stuff worth buying which was why it was all they stocked........you can learn alot about the people you are buying from if you pretend not to have a clue and just see what they come out with.

If people didn't buy the leftovers from places like tk maxx then they'd just get thrown away contributing to landfill, or get shipped abroad contributing to our carbon footprint.

The only way to stop it is for clothing companies to produce quality tasteful things that aren't over-priced in the first place! Smile

I tend not to buy proper outerwear from TK Maxx because they tend not to have stuff in styles or colours I like. They're great for base layers though, something which my local shop tends to lack or stocks overpriced branded base layers that are often inferior products. Otherwise I tend to get stuff from my local, they often knock a bit off because I'm such a nice customer Wink

Hey at the end of the day if you like something in tk maxx and its cheap why not buy it?

Yeah supporting local shops is a great theory, but not everyone can afford to drop around £250 on an outfit. so buying it from ebay or tk maxx makes finacial sense!

this argument always crops up at some point. I find its usually people with in the industry saying
'support you local shop' then its normal riders ( not kids whose parents will pay for anything they ask for!) saying 'theres some bargains on ebay or tk maxx'

anyway theres my view!

My children certainly dont get everything they ask for, theyre both at senior school now and have an allowance of £25.00 each in their bank accounts monthly and thats it, they dont get pocket money now so anything they want they use their own money as in mags make up etc
Think we must be quite lucky parents because mine havent been the kind of children who ask and get, they've learned the value of money,
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
back to the TkMaxx we got our girls clothing for Italy in 06 from there and its still going good, good quality items which didnt cost the earth, hopefully will be good for Canada in 08 Smile

I can understand "supporting the local scene" but with 4 of us into winter sports its not cheap lol

I appreciate that "funds" or lack of often determine where you buy your kit, and yes buying at your local independant store is an ideal. However you can pick up some real bargains at the end/start of season at local stores (or even ski show bargains) and the kit is still (hopefully) the best bit of kit for the job.

The majority of stuff I've seen in TK (bristol) is Trespass, head, quiksilver stuff, and usually only the cheaper end and poorer spec' gear that is sold to the holiday and school trip crowd via catalouges(sp?) low waterproof & breathability rating etc

and just to clarify..I consider myself a normal rider...I'm 35, not in the industry, mum & dad don't pay for anything, in fact I am Dad to the wanting kids....but I'd still rather support my local independant store...because they support me, when I'm organising a competition, when my board snaps in warranty, I snap a baseplate, or when they just knock a couple of quid off the bill for being a good customer....................

maybe I'm lucky and have a good relationship with my local shop that you don't get with the "snowboarding chain stores" or maybe it's just not important to each individual if they are buying their kit from a snowboard shop or an arse feeder ...but hey what the hell we'll all be able to buy our snowboard kit from a Nike superstore with our Nike credit card before long anyway!!!

Im with you on the end of season sale bargains at your local stores, I dont think ive ever bought anything full price, im never desperate enough to but something as soon as it comes out and always get my gear at this time of year. In the last few months ive bought stuff from 5 different 'small' snowboard stores via their websites at really low prices, make so much more sense than rushing out in september because youve just gotta have this years graphic or print. Never bought anything from TX maxx but thats mainly as i dont have one anywhere near my house..........if i did i wouldnt have a problem with it though.

rachie - I'm not say all kids are like that. But the majority of kids you see wearing the latest must have gear get their parents to buy it. then next season something else will be cooler and then they'll have to have that!
so I'm saying they'd chose to 'look good' rather than buy some cheap gear from tk maxx like us!

anyway thats not the argument!

without local shops putting back into comps etc where would the uk scene be? theres another way to look at it!

If i see a bargain somewhere regardless if its tk maxx or tsa i'll buy it if ive got the cash.

Tough call this one, in an ideal world I'd buy all my gear from the local shop, but it's very very hard to ignore some of the prices that TK Maxx are putting some of their stuff out at sometimes.

Yes, the bulk of the gear is obscure brands, or Columbia/Trespass stuff, but who needs anything better than that for a fridge / dryslop?

I've got 2 pairs of Goretex trousers, one cost me £100 (Burton) - and even at that they were in the sale, and another cost £23 (RipCurl). No prizes for guessing which ones came from TK's!

Nick - what is your local shop casue they sound a bit gay!

i can see the point in getting stuff from tk-craps if your on a tight budget, but there are ways to get stuff from snowboard shop cheaper..

first off is the SCUK membership and the numorus discounts tha come with it, or there's the pre/pos season sale
of you could just go in, say hello and talk to the guys in there...there usually friendy and full of good advice(apart from nick's local) and if they know you there mroe likely to give you some discount

and as for what steve3 said mos of us know that new 'Bling;' gear isnt going to make us ride better. but unfornunatly there are people who do and insist on gettign the latest Pro gear, qwhich does make me laugh

i just like having gear that looks good and does a good job
