As far as I know (at least it was what i did!), you have to take out theirs if you're going as part of their programme? I could be wrong as I didn't research it too hard but I thought that was the case

ye you either have to take out bunacs or find one that matches their requirements, I know of other people who have arranged their own in the past (not sure of the outcome of using them) but as long as they have the same basic cover as bunacs i think they accept it ok.

Yeah you can take out alternative insurance to the BUNAC policy; I've taken out the BMC insurance for next season and they've accepted that.

You will have to sign an indemnity form saying that you know that your cover may be different from Bunac's and such like. E-mail bunac work canada and ask them to send you a copy, they will also send you their insurance guidlines for arranging your own insurance which are:-

Please review your preferred policy and make sure that the following areas are covered:

1. Geographical region. If it is not a fully unrestricted world-wide policy, it must provide cover for the USA and Canada.
2. Period of cover. The insurance must provide cover for the period of your intended stay in Canada as indicated by your booked travel arrangements. Where a policy has a maximum period of less than 12 months it is your responsibility to adhere to the time frame determined by the policy.
3. Medical expenses. Canada does not operate a national health service and as a consequence the cost of medical treatment can be extremely high. You must have adequate cover in this area.
4. Work. The policy must cover you in the event that you have an accident whilst working. It does not need to cover employer liability (this is your employer’s responsibility) or loss of earnings; however, it must provide medical and repatriation cover in the event of an accident in the work place. If your policy includes work, but with limitations, (e.g. no cover for manual work), it is your responsibility to adhere to these policy restrictions.
5. Baggage. The policy must include baggage cover.
6. Winter Sports. If you will be in Canada during the winter, there is every chance that you will be drawn to the slopes. Please ensure that your policy either includes cover for the activities that you will (or may) be doing, or that it can be upgraded to include
them. If you are considering working for a full winter season, check to make sure that there aren’t any time restrictions. Some policies will only allow a percentage of your total trip to be spent skiing, others may impose a maximum period of winter sports cover (e.g. 30 days) that can be included as part of the policy.

You will then have to do the following:

WHAT NEXT?
Based on the information above, when you have chosen your alternative insurance policy you must send us the following documents:

The policy schedule letter. This is the document that will show (among other things) your name, the period of cover, the level of cover, the premium paid and the date of issue.

The policy wording (the small print, sometimes referred to as the policy certificate). This is the document that will confirm specific areas of cover. We ask that you read it carefully before purchasing any policy; pay special attention to the Exclusion sections of the policy, this is where any omissions of the policy will be detailed.
IMPORTANT: Insurance companies tend to provide a summary of cover with their sales literature and prices. This is not the policy wording. You must request, (or download) the full policy wording. Nothing else can be accepted. You must clearly highlight within the policy wording each of the areas of cover as listed above. Failure to do so will result in a delay to the processing of your application.

Insurance Indemnity Form (enclosed with this letter). This letter confirms that you have elected not to take BUNAC’s insurance policy. BUNAC is not responsible for any consequence as a result of your decision.

Hope that helps you and gives you a guide for what they are looking for.

Craig

They were about £100 cheaper than Bunac, most things in the policy were pretty similar tbh, but the cover for the skiing and snowboarding was much more exhaustive in the BMC policy, with ski mountaineering and £50,000 worth of SAR cover in comparison to only £3000 for Bunac, which was one of the main reasons I took out the BMC insurance. I wanted the most comprehensive possible cover for the riskiest part of the season; a ride in a heli after getting hurt in the backcountry could easily cost more than £3000 especially if you end up getting evaced straight to Vancouver if it is a serious life threatening injury.

https://www.thebmc.co.uk/Pages.aspx?page=17

31 days - £91.50
Annual - £213.00 + £114.50 for option 2 (removing the 93 day limit on individual trips for annual policies.)
ive emailed them to find out what it covers, i.e working abroad etc...
sounds expensive but could still work out cheaper than bunacs as Denizen says.

It really depends on how long you go for, with the BMC one the price is the same for any trip over 93 days up to a year in length. If you are going only for the winter and not staying for the summer then the Bunac one will almost certainly be better value for money.

The bunacs one was very good when i made a claim. paid very quickly wiht no arguments. which is more than most

also for a 6 month seaosn they were very resonable.

i am going with endsleigh ( who bunacs is through) again for my trip to NZ as i was so impressed wiht them.

problem with insurance companies is you never know how good they are till you have to claim.
