Make - Salomon
Model - Relay Series
Colour - White & Silver & Blue
Cost - £150
Where - Snow & Rock (Brighton)
When - February 07
Mountain test - Chamonix, Argentiere, Le Tour & Vallee Blanche during March 07
Purchased these new bindings to to increased frustration with Salomon boot / Burton bindings combo. I never felt that my boot fitted quite right and would end up with painful or numb feet after a whole day on the mountain.
First impression - a bit weird. Very flexible bindings with footbeds that cover the screws to the board and 'flow' (wash my mouth out) type wires that act as a tensioning system.
On the mountain - I have to admit that I was a bit nervous when I first strapped in at the top of the Bochard red in Argentiere - quite a lot of moguls and a few narrow sections that require tight, turns (also many skiers doing stupid things in front of you). This is where the whole wire thing comes into it's own. The turning ability with these bindings is greatly improved and due to the raised footbed you can really angle the board on an edge so much so that I never really felt out of control even on icy sections.
The true test of all mountain freeride was the Vallee Blanche - 18kms of unpisted glaciers with many crevasses and other hidden dangers - here the bindings really performed. Responsive turning and great cushioning after unexpected airs. Comfy for the 3 hour run and absolutely zero complaints. When I inspected them upon return to uk they still look like new. Great product Salomon which will probably improve with next seasons tweaks.
I have a complete Salomon set up boots, board and bindings - so it would be good to here from others with a combo setup from other manaufacturers. |

| I just can't get over the fact that they're...ugly! They really are one of the least pretty bindings on the market. |

Matter of opinion...................I think Burtons are nasty, tacky looking creatures but like the Salomons look........apart from that damm pink!! But I know you wouldn,t buy bindings based on what they look like, 'cus that would be foolish! |

It's all personal preference really. I really like my cartels and I get zero calf burn. Anyway, that's a bit off topic.
Looks wise it's a matter of personal preference isn't it |

| I've got the relays pros and love them really comfy and don't really notice the wire bit. I assume that's the bit that Charlie found "ugly"??? |

I agree with Charlie. Can't get over the look. If bindings were put in front of you for the first time without brand names (like the transworld goodwood tests), then you'd probably think the relay pro is made by some naff random company.
- The sides look so high and randomly designed
- They look ultra plasticky
- .........and what on earth is that cream bit on the front. Did they forget to paint them
- The rear profile is terrible
Obviously these are just my opinions which hold no water, ALTHOUGH i know that these are suppossed to be AMAZING.
Hopefully next seasons are more aesthetically pleasing as I'd defos get a pair based on what everyone keeps saying about them (Although love my new 390's).

fair enough i'm not sure but i think the beigey colour maybe the the same as the base of some of the salomon boots... well mine anyway mine are same colour.
There are better looking bindings for sure, but you can't really see them when ya trousers are over them anyway.
It was between them, normal Relay Series, 390s or Targas, didn't like the colour of the Relay Series, no 390s in my size, thought the Targas would be too stiff, but Demoed the Relays and loved them, and even though they are supposed to be stiffish the flexi heal loops makes them comfy.
Spot on. |

All true about personal preference, same for me with Burtons, to me they look, plastic & tacky with all the shiny gold/silver sh1t, Rome are no doubt great bindings but they look pants, apart from the black Targas I saw at TSA yesterday. Personally I HATE the pink bits on my relay eLites but I'm not so shallow as to rule out the binding I want for its tech 'cus of it's colour, they are covered by your pants anyway if you actually ride your board!!!! But thats me, too old for all that sh1t!!!!! |
