Out of interest has anyone had to re order a card due to losing their first one? Cant find mine and I go away in four weeks, so logged onto the site to order one and they want to charge me £10 for the honour! Thought it was cheeky, why do I pay my national insurance if I'm going to be charged for it? Not my issue they changed it to a plastic card rather than a bit of paper. Any ideas how to get a new one free?

Ermm you answered your own question....you cant get one for free...they cost 10 quid.

No it's not your fault they changed it to a plastic card....just like its not their problem that you lost it. See what im getting at?

To be fair you dont need the card anyway when I was in Tignes over new year I had an hairline crack in my arm. Didnt even ask for insurance or E111. I saw the doctor had xrays etc. I had to pay for my treatment on credit card 140euros then claim it back on insurance when you get home

So you pay full price for everything you buy? My question was is there any way around it, but I have found my card now so the issue is null and void! Cheers for you help though..........

Chatting to Towergate Wislon recently made me aware of the critical part of when the EHIC kciks in - producing it for treatment at a hosptial or doctors surgery means that the doctor should record the EHIC number on the medical documentation. If this is done, then once claiming your money back from the insurance company they will refund your excess payment. Easy.

If you lose your card and can't get a physical one in replacement before your trip don't fret, go to the EHIC website and call them. They have an emergency international line that you/doctors/someone can call in the event you need treatment and will be able to fax/email stuff to the hospital to get it sorted. I know because I lost my card and they gave me this number incase my card didn't reach me in time (it didn't) as they'd printed my name spelt incorrectly on the first one!

Remember that EHIC cards are only valid for 5 years so will need renewing. Luckily I checked mine a few weeks before going away and had enough time to renew it.

It seems like a joke to me anyway! I have a passport, you can see I'm English, and therefore in Europe - why do I have to register for and carry around a plastic card?

Just so people know in the event you do have your ehic card lost or stolen it is free to replace the website is https://www.ehic.org.uk/Internet/startApplication.do
The websites trying to charge you a tenner are ripping you off. Also a number worth putting in your phone is the ehic emergency number so if you lose your card while your away they can sort you out its 00441912181999.
