That was quick for the NHS - I got my card 2 days after I applied!

Mine arrived after 8/9 weeks but then I was one of the first to apply.

If only it was E111 no 000001 Surprised)

Worth checking the small print of your insurance, my previous insurance wouldn't pay out in europe if you didn't have an E111 or it's new plastic version. Confused

I have no idea how long it took for my first one to arrive as I moved just after applying, and myex-husband didn't forward any of my post.
The second one came within 2 days

Carte neige only gets you off the mountain. Still well worth having tho as if you are seriously injured it gets you a chopper ride

as i found out in cham this is a very important bit of kit
i found myself in a hospital bed waiting for x-rays
when i found out travel insurance is not accepted at french hospitals i was stuck
after a few frantic phone calls home to sort out a health card which my sis done online for me a phone call to my local nhs trust and they faxed it through to the hospital i was in so it can be done quite quick if needed
but it only covers you for 80% of your medical bills so remember that people you will still have to pay something before you leave then claim it back later from your travel insurance
and it does not cover you for any mountain rescue or airlift fees as the poor woman in the bed next to me found out neither did her travel insurance she had a £1500 bill to pay
you can buy mountain rescue insurance that will cover all costs including airlift
