Review: Burton P1 Bindings
Well, I have had a relevation. Have ridden these for the first time (3 hours) and can honestly say they are like comfy slippers after 6 years of hobnailed boots. They are magnificently adjustable, you can even rotate the highback so it lines up with your heel edge. Burton has though to make the strap adjustment bolts capped so there is no need for a tool or screwdriver to adust these. The ankle straps are gel filled and extremely comfortable. They seem to be extremely well made (solid yet very light) and were very easy to adjust to the size required by my admittedly huge feet. Support from the capstraps (which I haven't used before) is excellent and you really feel as though you are secured tightly to the highback. I am hoping they will be as comfortable after a full day on the mountain, indications are that they will be. I didn't opt for the wingtips as I actually prefer the look of the standard P1's. They are identical in construction apart from the wingtips lack the metal Burton logo on the ankle strap, I think its because the wingtips have embroidered straps. Anyway, in my opinion a very good buy.

I bought some P1s back in April to replace my Salomon Chief's which were beginning to get a bit knackered (especially the ratchets). I've ridden them down at Castleford maybe 8 or 10 times now, and while i really like them they have taken some getting used.
Firstly, the heel lift seems much lower than my Salomons, put 'em side by side and the foot beds look exactly the same height, but somehow the P1s feel . . . flatter.
Secondly the Burton cap straps and ratchets just work a bit differently, and the first few runs i did on the P1s i really didn't feel like i could get the cap straps tight enough, even though i was used to cap straps, the Burtons just felt a bit too comfy and i was forever trying to get an extra click out of the rachets.
Anyway, now i'm used to 'em i love 'em, really comfy, really quick in and out, and most importantly very very responsive, with a great feel for the slope, but without feeling every bump and track on it.
Niggles: the sodding footbed cover over the baseplate. Why oh why Burton have gone for a hinged cover and plastic clips to keep it in place, rather then the standard hook and screw arrangement that everyone else seems to go for i don't know. I keep expecting these little plastic clips to just snap every time i prise off the cover (even though they've been fine so far), and then when you do get the cover up, you've got to hold it open while you work on the baseplate screws. . . irritating!
On the whole though, no regrets about forking out a bit of extra cash for these. Have tried a pair of 390s and a pair of Targas which friends have got since i bought these, and while i really like the stretchy rubber cap straps that you get on both of those, the P1s are definitely comfier, while at the same time, to my mind give a better feel for the slope. |
