flipp took the words out of my mouth there.
TK Maxx have thier place, and the smaller more "honest" retailers have thier place too. i'm not going to get a pair of bindings from TK Maxx. i'm not going to get goggles from TK Maxx because they're awful. i'm not going to get the majority of my clothes from TX Maxx. but if i wander in there and see a decent jacket for good money, i'll buy it. just because i'm choosing to do that instead of buying a more steezy jacket for twice the money from a more snowboard-orientated retailer doesn't really add up to taking food off they plate of the little man in my book. i'll still go to a proper snowboard gear retailer for 90% of my gear, won't I? |

yeah i understand that some people cant afford stuff, and yes i know some shops over price things but a lot of shops are owned by hardworking individuals, who also believe that some shops are over priced and that dont do it...and when that do they give all shops a bad name...
but when the big companies come in then the little guys have no chance unless they have a faithfull costomers,
my local shop have had to stop selling a few brands cause tkmaxx is selling them.
and tkmaxx dont buy stuff the shops cant sell they buy stuff when the shops close down!
I actually know a fair bit about TKMaxx purchasing as a distribution business I used to be involved with used them to shift old stock. Robster isn't quite right, but does have a lot of good points.
TKMaxx buy last season's stock from both the vendor (NikeACG direct) and any distributors that hold stock they want to shift. They typically buy at prices that allow vendors a very small margin but typically distributors selling to TKMaxx will be making a small loss of items sold and do it mainly to shift stock they can't easily sell for profit that takes up warehouse space (and therefore costs them money). I've not heard of them buying from stores that are closing but I'm sure they probably do.
The way i look at it is that even if TKmaxx started selling boards/boots/bindings/etc I would still buy from my local shop, and I would also go there for properly tech goods, but if you're looking for a second jacket or pants that won't get used that much, or for kit to wreck on a dryslope, then TKMaxx is good.
I'm pretty fortunate to be able to afford to make this choice, but there are a lot of people for whom TKmaxx is a lifesaver as it allows them to afford decent gear at prices they can afford to pay, which they probably wouldn't consider if buying at full price.
TKMaxx services the needs of a market - I don't consider that evil, but then I wouldn't buy all my gear there |

I'm with Robster on this. Support your local snowboard shop because they support local snowboarding. Kinda obvious really.
TK Maxx doesn't organise comps or jams, it doesn't hook up promising riders with product in order to keep shredding, it doesn't ask about your last holiday or latest trick, it doesn't provide knowledgeable advice on the kit.
0kaaaaaaaay....
We're all going for a "shop till you drop" in your local snowboard shop and Why-my-legs? is paaaaaaaaaaying. |

| I buy from TK maxx sometimes. last week I bought a pair of gore tex gloves as a second pair.A month before I bought Burton Gore gloves in the sale at my local(ish) shop. I very rarely pay full price for my gear anyway. If I buy from smaller snowboard shops it's normally during the summer so I get last season's stuff at a sale price. I am lucky and have industry contacts who i can go to for hard goods. I used to own a skate shop so understand the whole "support your local shop" thing but If I bought everything at full price from my local board shop I wouldn't be able to afford as much time in the mountains and that's what it's all about and the whole reason I need the gear in the first place! Spending time in the mountains is expensive especially when doing seasons so I try to save as much as I can on gear as I don't have a massive amount of cash! |

T K Maxx is like a jumble sale! I cant believe n e one has the patience to go through all that rubbish when for a few quid more you can go to a shop that has all the gear there ready n waiting for you!!!
Nope cant say I would ever be proud to shop at "the maxx" although I whole heartedly agree with ROBster on the his point...

erm a few quid more..... i saved like £50 .. thats 2days lift pass at nevis
or almost a new front tyre for my supermoto
and the my local Maxx has a good rack of all the decent board/ski wear no hassel looking through it
as i said before .. hard goods board/bindings/boots yeah local shop to get advice and come back
but for kit, if i see it at maxx i'll buy it, most board shops round here dont stock a huge selection
of clothes anyho, so i'm happy to buy it from where i can, if i see it in tantrum then cool buy it there
but if its in Maxx then get it there and save ££ for boarding/tyres for the bike

Tk Maxx rocks - but not in the snowboard clothing department. In my local one it's all weirdly sized, ugly sh1t.
I bought some tweed trousers from there the other day, they are SEXUAL |

and so a happy medium is just about reached...
local shop for friendliness, knowledge and tech gear purchases
tk maxx for possible bargain clothing without the 'experience' of the local option
no more evilness please!! |

just had a thought here, what if the big cheese of tk ma starts seeing this, and then ends up selling top kit from last year at cut price- what will people do then?
Lets be honest, its more than a few quid we will save! it would be a tricky one wouldnt it?
So do you really want to pay 50 quid more than you have to- to talk about your snowboarding holiday, when clearly its part of the whole sales approach anyway.
That said if it was a choice of tk max and a good retailer eg avalanche or ss20, the i might think twice about a new tkmaxx
Ok enough on this.. |

Ermmmmmmmmmm Whaaat?
There's about 3 racks of snowboarding attire...and yes most of it is crap...but it'll take you 10 maybe 20 minutes to go through it. And you aren't just saving a few quid...you're saving 50,60,70 quid. That amount of money can be put towards buying equipment from ur local boarding shop.
I will always make a trip to the local boarding shop to buy equipment, but clothes? Nah...too expensive. |
