Ch 2. The Bitch
At the medical centre in Alpes d’Huez, the x ray confirmed what I thought. My forearm was split at the end, a piece of it sticking out towards my little finger, looking a little like a tulip leaf. On one x ray you can actually see how close it is to a vein, this would have to be put back into it’s proper place before I could be plastered. I was told I had two choices, she would try to reduce the fracture, it would be very painful for one minute, or I could go to hospital and they would do it under a general. I would lose a minimum of two days going to hospital, so I held out my arm.
“do it, bitch!”
“I don’t understand…bitch?”
“Sorry, doctor”
“ah, doctor is bitch?”
“oui, today doctor is a bitch”
She had me lie down on a bed, took my arm in her hands and slowly felt towards my wrist with her thumbs.
“brace” she said
Then her thumbs dug in. Have you ever been to hospital where they ask you, on a scale of 1 to 10, how do you rate the pain? Well they’re lying…that scale goes up to 100, and under this small woman’s steely fingers I felt every one of them. High pain is strange, it cuts out most other senses. You can’t see anything, taste anything, or smell anything. Unfortunately it does absolutely nothing to your hearing. The sound of bones grinding seems if anything amplified, for no reason other than the perverse one that it’s probably the worst sound you can imagine. No, you can’t imagine it, not in your wildest nightmare can you even come close.
She left me alone for a while, then returned and another x ray was taken, but to be honest it wasn’t necessary. My arm was still bent in a clear u shape, the reduction just hadn’t worked.
I didn’t want to go to hospital in the first place. After having suffered the attempted reduction I wanted to go even less. It seemed a waste of what I’d gone through. So again, I held my arm up.
“another go?”
“you want me to try again?”
Every part of my body was screaming no! but my mouth betrayed me and said ‘oui’
“ok, one more, if this doesn’t work then you go to hospital”
Back on the bed, her thumbs tracing there way slowly up towards my wrist. I was calm. I think I had already forgotten the pain from the first attempt.
“brace”
Her thumbs dug in, more forcefully than last time, the pain hit 150 and I pulled my arm away.
“no! I can’t do this if you pull away”
Jeez, the bitch wants me to relax while she tortures me! I handed her back my hand and relaxed, it no longer belongs to me. I barely notice her fingers tracing up, searching for their target.
“brace”
My arm stays still, I do not recognise it as part of my body. Nothing else stays still however. A man squirming on a bed under the hands of a woman is probably never a dignified sight, but most times the indignity is masked by more pleasurable sensations. This time only the indignity is present. After it was over, she left me alone with my suffering again. I was shaking for a while, until once again the pain subsided.
I looked at my wrist and was hopeful, it seemed to be straight but when the x ray came out it was obvious that it hadn’t worked. The gap was about half previous, but still noticeable. I tried to get her to have another go, but to be honest she probably didn’t have the strength in her fingers to get it much further, and I’m not sure I had enough tolerance left either.
“non, hospital”
Words I didn’t want to hear, but there was no arguing, neither of us had the strength for any more. |
