I’m sure that by now you all know that I completed my prediction of breaking something and ending up in a hospital bed. This is the story, some people found the telling of it amusing, so here I present it in the best form my limited literary skills will allow.

In my view it also defines who I am. I have included those parts that do not show me in a good light. If I am to claim this is the story of Tiberius, then I can't just include the good. Anyhow, the good in Tiberus would leave us with only a small tale Laughing

Finally, it's a little long and I've only got one hand and 2 fingers to type with, so I'm splitting it up.

Ch 1 The Mountain

In another thread, Robster says he felt a bit to blame for persuading me to go on the black run. It’s true I thought that the black run’s were probably beyond me, and there was a good chance I would injure myself; but seriously, very few people persuade Tiberius to do anything he doesn’t want to do, and they’re all female and have their lips wrapped around a part of his anatomy not available when wearing impact shorts Twisted Evil

Anyway, it was neither early on, nor on the steepest parts of the run that I fell. I was actually starting to feel more comfortable. I was happily swapping edges on inclines much greater, and at speeds much higher than I’d ever been on a board. Still, something went wrong on toe edge and I fell over at speed.

It was when I tried to get up that I realised things weren’t right. The fall was at high speed, but hadn’t seemed particularly bad. It hadn’t hurt much when I fell onto my closed fists, but. my left hand wouldn’t move properly and the familiar dull ache of broken bone was present. Most people don’t recognise it at first, expecting a much sharper pain, but I know exactly how it feels.

In a fit of pique I threw my board away. Now on a mountain, it’s not big and it’s not clever, but I’m human, and occasionally I do things that later I’m not proud of. That’s who I am and you’re just going have to take the bad with the good.

It could have so easily injured someone, I was letting people down. Not just myself, but the people who had brought me there. When you go on a mountain with someone you expect them to behave sensibly. Still, seeing my board go flying off down the mountain calmed me down and focussed my attention on getting down to first aid.

On the walk down, something more worrying started to grab my attention. The two fingers furthest from my thumb had developed serious pins and needles and were turning blue; I guessed the broken bone was cutting off the blood supply. I don’t see that I had a lot of choice really, I felt up my wrist until I could feel bone that shouldn’t have been there and squeezed until I felt something move. I thought I squeezed hard, and I thought it hurt like hell. As I will recount later, I was wrong on both counts.

We were intercepted at the foot of a chairlift by a mountain patrol on ski’s who took me into a hut and gave me a quick examination.

“it’s not broken, you’ve probably just dislocated it, you’d be in a lot more pain if it was broken”

I guess he was trying to re-assure me and keep me calm. Unfortunately of all the people on the mountain that day, it was pretty pointless saying it to me. No matter, it was easy enough to go with his dislocation theory. Allowing him to take me off the mountain meant that Rob and Board Angel could carry on riding, rather than nursemaid me. It seemed pretty stupid to ruin their day too, but it turned out to be the last I saw of anyone who spoke English for nearly three days. There were times when I wish I’d been more selfish and taken them up on their offer to accompany me.
