the runs and lifts change each year!!!

really? which resort is that?

agree it would be great to have contour lines on the maps, and even to make them a bit more like conventional maps really, would help loads esp for backcountry escapades..

OK, I don't mean that extreme, but the 3 valleys add another lift each year and the runs vary slightly...in other words, buying a 3D map with the idea of reusing it year-in year-out only works if the map stays up to date and lasts a few years, I'm not convinced that the 3D ones are worth the money compared to the free ones in the resort...

3D ones are nice, but I've found the free ones virtuallly as good and with the added advantage that there's a limitless supply of the things.

No reason why flat bits of pistes couldn't be indicated on normal maps, e.g. by a yellow line down both sides

There are a few usability problems with piste maps, one is that the lifts are marked with black lines and so are black pistes! Also the maps are generally representative not realistic and yet they look like they are exact - e.g. lifts and runs not to scale, distance between lifts and runs is inconsistent.

So, on my wish list of elements I want to see (please add your own suggestions)

- Width of pistes
- Gradient and angle of pistes (some which fall away to one side make it difficult for beginners to make turns in one direction)
- Moguls
- Embankments/escarpments (cliffs!)
- Powder, rocky zones and trees
- North facing slopes / shady zones
- Landmarks like restaurants and sign posts

I understand sometimes its difficult to work out, but its not that bad really, for a free bit of paper that normally has a lot to put in without being cluttered.

All the places ive been to mark restaurants on the map, along with medical posts etc.

Some maps put in things like trees and cliffs, though I agree its not all that detailed, but i think its hard to without it being cluttered.

Surely moguls change with snow / useage of the piste?

A good idea nevertheless

If anyone wants to contribute (and there is a lot to build up) I have started a wiki that anybody can add to at http://boardermaps.wikispaces.com/

Meanwhile, I am working on the mapping, any knowledge you add to the wiki will help me build on my knowledge. I will start with the 3 valleys around Meribel as that is where I know from recent experience.

sounds awesome, excellent idea.
do you plan on selling these maps on paper, or putting them on the internet and availabile to print as this way the can be updated as resorts change?

the maps have to be free IMHO, you can't compete with the local maps if you charge. I want to be able to print them off the site and maybe one day get some advertising to pay for a published copy. besides, this isn't a commercial venture, I just want a better map!

I will spend some time this weekend building the structure of the site a bit, but if in doubt have a go, it's a wiki for that reason, any content is welcome like bars, restaurants, off-piste, hire shops, whatever you want. Power to the boarders...

I've put on some of the runs in Meribel that I know (some greens - I'm a beginner!), anyone who wants to help out follow this link and look at the pages marked NEW. Copy the content and go and update another of the runs if you can. If you know another resort, go ahead and add it, there is no registration or technical knowledge required, I can tidy up anything you add anyway... http://boardermaps.wikispaces.com/Meribel
