After an icy week in Meribel...and due to being a beginner boarder I am keen to find (or produce) a piste map for boarders. I don't want to do any more flat, narrow, icy traverses unless absolutely necessary , the free piste maps seem to be touristy and ski-orientated. What is wrong with the odd contour line and width of piste marking? We took a 3D Mount Map with us this time and this helped but it is still not quite what I need.
If there is not an alternative map out there then I am serious about producing one...any help from seasonaires in the resorts would be appreciated and I will set up a site to build the maps (free to use if you contribute)
Any thoughts welcomed at this point... |

| Sounds good to me too; its a bummer if you don't know a flat bits coming up, and you end up having to walk. |

| Great plan. The map we had of Morzine was a nightmare to try and work out, and I ended up walking down a couple of slopes because having got onto them discovered they were only about 3m wide in places and nowhere near wide enough for a beginner like me to put in some turns. |

piste maps?????
you only need to know where the lifts are. exploring the mountain is the fun part. and walking back up the valley for 3 and a half hours to get to civilisation again is good exercise. |

lol, so to do boarding properly you need to be able to traverse miles of flat paths (take a skier along for a tow), climb rocks and/or metres of powder, dig yourself out of avalanches and kill marmots with your bare hands to eat at night...
I'll stick with the piste map idea, thanks |

Couldn't agree more with the title of this thread. You can't always see the flat bits coming (being a more advanced boarder still doesn't give you the skills to see round corners or through mountains:-)). And as a beginner I would've loved this type of map so I could just avoid the damn things until I was more confident with speed.
Sorry I don't know any resorts well enough to contribute, but great idea! |

I think it's a great idea - I did ask when i was away last if anyone did this !!
Not overly worried about icy patches as this can not always be predicted apart from stay away from shady areas early in the morning but knowing which flat areas to avoid would be a real bonus. |

dont get me wrong it is a good idea. but having to hang/climb along a branch to drop down into a gulley, and fighting my way through bushes in 2ft of powder was great fun ....weird there was no other tracks heading down there |

Yeah, that's the 3D Mount Map I was talking about. They are good but they lack some detail of the runs since they try to fit so much in such a small map. Good talking point at lunchtimes though, our instructor was amazed, he had never seen one before.
Also, they are not as durable as they say, ours is coming apart at one fold and besides, the runs and lifts change each year!!! |

| Sounds like a top idea, I reckon a map showing flat bits and notoriously icy or narrow bits with alternative routes would be pretty useful. |

really? which resort is that?
agree it would be great to have contour lines on the maps, and even to make them a bit more like conventional maps really, would help loads esp for backcountry escapades.. |
