Hi all,
Need a bit of advice/suggestions. Next season I want to do two/three weeks in whistler. Probably leaving around 28.12.12.
I will be travelling alone. Here lies the problem.... I don't want to board/live alone for that period. I am tempted by the all tracks or core snow camps but they seem quite a lot of money. I don't mind this, if they are worth it, but are they? Has anyone done them? Alternatively has anyone any ideas? I'd quite like to have some sort of shared accommodation (chalet type set up) but would like my own room. Im looking for a group to ride with and go out with in the evenings. Some insider knowledge would be handy for some good off piste and a bit of cat track/ heli boarding is needed! Im in my early 30's.
Thanks in advance for any advice. |

I've been to Whistler on my own a number of times, just staying in a hotel, it is really easy to meet people.
I have not stayed in any myself but i think a lot of the shared accommodation tends to be for a month minimum as it is geared towards people doing seasons |

Thanks rideonwhistler, that looks quite good.
Just got to sort some accommodation now! A room in a chalet/house would be cool. Any ideas anyone? |

Stay at the southside diner in creekside dude...
- it's cheap
- has single rooms aswell as hostel style accomodation
- does a wicked breakfast with more maple syrup than you can ever imagine!
- loads of lovely people stay there who are all in the same boat so it's easy to get a crew together
- it's right in creekside!
- powder mountain cat boarding and heli tours meet there in the morning so you can creep down and casually hang out having breakfast and if they have a spare space then they let you on! (maybe for free or if not then at a heavily reduced price)
this is top secret info by the way

I used to like the Southside diner a lot, but I've not been there for years. My current favourite breakfast is on the other side of town, but that really is top secret
Powder Mountain was taken over a handful of years ago by a couple of washed up pro snowboarders and they shifted the breakfast a few times since then. It's been at Gone Bakery for the last couple of years, the one by the Village Square. I'm not sure where this season's pick-up is going to be yet, but it's more likely to be in the town centre as it's just easier for most people.
At Powder Mountain there have been huge improvements in terrain (amount and condition), cats, helicopters, the lodge, equipment, safety, vertical and guiding since the operation was taken over. That's what a company run by snowboarders can do. The new owners didn't repeat the previous management's "stand by" approach. Instead everyone on the cat or heli pays the same price. You can always turn up and see if there's a seat, but it's unlikely you'd find a space and you'd pay the same as everyone else anyway.
(I don't work for Powder Mountain - check their website, but I ride with them a lot and sometimes they give me jackets if I promise to wear them at snowdomes and not say rude words.) |

Schooled! thanks for the update dude... it's been a while since i was last there...
shame about the freebies now though... the cost of 20 breakfasts was way cheaper than the 2 cat board trips and one heli |

Yeah, not sure how good all those breakfasts would be for your waist line
Standby is tough in resorts; the people are right there and the operators' costs are mostly variable. So if they don't fly/ ride then they don't take much cost.
You can still get daily standby deals at some of the "middle of nowhere" heli places, the catch being that you need to get yourself to the middle of nowhere and then hang around there until someone doesn't fly. Even then, these days they have a wide range of machine sizes to allocate space from, so it's not what it was. |
