I've been reading a fair few reviews on Bansko and it seems like a nice cheap place to go for a Ski/Board holiday.

However one thing worrying me is that alot of people are complaining about queue sizes at the gondola?
I know to take reviews like this with a pinch of salt as someone once told me "If you have a good experience you tell your friends, if you have a bad one you tell the world" but there is quite alot of people mentioning it.
Are they just going at peak, peak times like Christmas/New Year or is it always queued? The reviews mix from 1 hour wait to 4 hours?

Anyone that has been recently, is this the case or is this just the very busy few weeks?

school holidays it can get pretty busy...

avoid uk holidays and the first couple weeks in Jan (as it's russian new year or something) and any FIS ski racing weekends and it's generally ok. but, get to the gondola about 8am, it opens about 8:15, and you shouldn't have too many problems - the mental 4 hr queues are usually those that turn up about 9am on a school holiday, but they do happen.

note - if you're there with mental queues then either look for the free ski buses in the gondola car park or bite the bullet and get a taxi (think it's about £5 ea for a full taxi)

We went first week in January and the queues were mental. We didn't even have breakfast so we could get up to the gondola early and there was still a massive wait. Tbh i didn't think the boarding there was that good there either. I for one wouldn't rush back even off peak.

We went at the end of Feb 2011 and didn't realise there was some kind of crazy Greek 4 day bank holiday that started on the Thursday. The first couple of days weren't so bad (maybe showed up around 9am and queued 45mins tops) but the last few days of our week were MENTAL for queues!! Also the slopes weren't much fun cos they were so busy and really chopped up by the end of the day. I got bored of not being able to enjoy skiing without constantly having to dodge people. But this actually turned out to be a good thing cos it was then I decided to hit the baby slopes and learn to snowboard instead Smile Every cloud...

So yeah, just avoid national holidays!! (and not just the Bulgarian ones)

I've looked at Bulgaria for the family trip and I've not been able to find anything much cheaper than I've found in France. When you take into account the longer flights and the negative reviews, I wonder if it's worth it. Never wanted to take the risk with the family.

After doing a season there i got to see pretty much when the busy times were. AVOID russian holidays, this was the first weeks in January as the queues were huge (but as we had season passes we had queue skip).

During school holidays were busy as well but nothing compared to russian holidays. Other times were busyish but the queue went down quickly, or there is the bus from the gondola station or a taxi which is cheap.

I think the FIS weekends were busy but what do you expect, but march was ok and wasnt to busy, even though we had queue skip we went the regular way. Only advice i would give is again get there early around 8ish to get to the front of the queue.

If you want to snowboard, collect a few more pennies and go to france, austria etc. etc. i've reviewed Bansko before as I went last season and tbh if you like to board for a couple of hours then go get smashed, then Bansko is fine as the alcohol is crazy cheap. But if you want to go a proper snowboarding holiday I wouldn't recommend at all. When we went the queues were mayhem, but that aside, the mountain wasn't worth the wait, you'd cover everything super quick and there's nothing too challenging. We never bothered going off piste, which might have been a better option but all in all, we've done it and wouldn't return, would definitely rather put an extra few bucks at another European resort. So many other people give it rave reviews though, t'is all subjective I suppose. I'd call it a Blackpool on snow - not my kinda gig...
