Hello,
As above really. Looking to head over in March for 10 days of boarding and a couple of weeks of exploring Japan (sort of).
I'll be on my own so looking for places that offer reasonable facilities (shower, hot water a bit of privacy!) but at a decent price.
With the £ so weak against the Yen I need to try and get the maximum from the minimum (if that makes sense!).
Hostels are fine I guess. But the last one I stayed at was so cramped I felt like i was practically in the same bed as the dude next to me!
Hoping to book soon so it can be one less thing to think about! |

Cheers Yoda. Picked up WL yesterday. Will be good to get a flavour at least. I imagine theres no way I'll be doing the off-pistey stuff that those guys probably do.
Trouble for me is I want to go to Japan for about 24 days and definitely don't want to just snowboard there.
Thanks woody for the link. Not sure if the search reference was for this site but it really doesn't bring up specifics for a soloist and accom names. (hence the post!) |

have a look here for accommodation in Niseko. they're a helpful company. But I stand by Shizenkan Lodge, who you should contact in the first. Stayed there twice and would again. Excellent facilities even if it's not ensuite, plenty of toilets (heated seats and built in bidets of course) and Japanese shower / bath rooms. Can't go wrong.
If you can be bothered to look through the search results there is alot of information from others who have come to Hokkaido, it may require effort and / or time on your part. |

if you're looking at Niseko, then this place is across the road from me at the moment and is decent.... cheap, alright facilities, bus stop right outside and only a 5 minute walk from town. If you're willing to spend a fair amount of money you could find a much better spot right in the heart of things somewhere, but Shizenkan is prolly the best of the cheapies! |

If you're planning on checking out other resorts on Hokkaido, check out Asahidake, Furano and kamui. All are relatively close to each other and offer passes that are acccepted at all 3 resorts. Also Furano is a proper city (not just a ski resort) so has a lot of hotels, restaurants and bars. Prices generally cheaper than Niseko because the Aussie hordes haven't found out too much about this place......but they are sniffing around!! Also closer to niseko, Kiroro gets good reports as does Tommamu. If you are wanting to hit some resorts on Honshu for a different, bigger mountain flavour then look for Hakuba and Shiga Kogen. Naeba and kagura in Yuzawa are up there as well. These resorts are easily accesed from Tokyo by use of the Shinkansen (bullet train) or buses. You can pick up deals with JR (the train company) to do day return shinkansen deals that include lift pass for about 10-12,000 yen. They also do hotel plans.
a good website to check out on japan is www.snowjapan.com |

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.
I'm debating whether to go through an agent/tour operator or just doing it on my own. Whilst I've set aside a reasonable budget I'd like to save where I can (but not so much that I lose quality/comfort).
What would be the voting for?
book with an agent operator VS book seperates on my own (currently flights are £580!)
I know an agent has got to factor their profit but I wonder if they really do have access to deals that mere mortals dont?? |

| what you might want to do is book your first step with a travel agent, getting your flight in and out sorted plus the first stage hotel at the area you want to hit, then when you get here you can get a guage on conditions and then organise your next step. March can have variable conditions, while there will still be plenty of snow and other snow events its unlikely to be as good as late Jan or Feb, so being flexible in where you can go would be a good thing. In japan as well you don't need to lub your snowboard bag around with you, you can courier it to your next stop for about 2 or 3,000 yen and this usually can be done overnight (but is dependent on where you are going, so ask 1st) |

| Annupuri YHA is unreal. Good value for money, twin share rooms, great value food, friendly owner and pretty much right on the slopes. Only thing is not on the party side of Niseko - buses are available though if you fancy spending valuable drinking time with the Aussies in the bars! |

Thanks for the tips. Just booked my flights (yikes!) Going over on the 14 Mar heading back 6th Apr!
Haven't sorted any accomodation or anything - but hopefully now this is out of the way it'll give me the focus I need.
Got a quote on internal flight to Chitose from Tokyo - £200 one way! WTF! So will be looking to JR pass it on the overnight. Can someone correct me if I'm wrong that the JR pass will allow me to do this for no cost?? My understanding of the JR pass is that its like an uber Travelcard (i.e. unlimited travel across the rail network). Someone please correct me if I'm wrong cos then I need to sort some other options out!
Cripes - 3weeks on my todd in a most foreign of foreign countries....what am i doing!? |

Just wanted to say thanks for this. I've booked a couple of nights at the backpacker lodge. Hopefully should be okay.
Just wondering though, as you say, this is one of the cheapies and therefore a bit basic. |They're charging 4,300yen per night for the private dorm room. Now I can probably go to 8000yen per night but for that i would certainly expect a hike in quality as well as a single private room.
Just wanted to put it out there for any suggestions? |

I stayed at the Backpacker (shizenkan) in Jan for two weeks, the place is brilliant. Its cheap, the beds are big sturdy and have decent quality bedding. I stayed in a mixed dorm and I wouldn’t have bothered with a private room, met lots of top people because of mixed facilities etc. The atmosphere is very relaxed and generally very Aussie. Nearly all the tourists in Niseko are from Oz, of course there are Europeans etc but mainly Aussies.
The backpacker has a bus stop right outside, it goes to the hirafu main gondola which is 2 lifts from the top or the bus also goes to Hanozono side of the mountain. TIP on fresh pow days get the first bus (8.20) and go to Hano, take the first chair up and head through strawberry fields, its a big fun area after a fresh dump!
Make sure you hike the peak, its really worth it, also try the annupuri side which is great out of the gates at the top. In niseko village area there is a nice natural halfpipe / valley run which is at the bottom of superstation between some winding greens.
Can’t say how jealous I am that you are off there, I wish i was going back its honestly epic!! |
