Woo! Tis' live
Thanks to Dunx and everyone who have put in a lot of work to make the new changes to the site, and make sure you check out the new features that are on their way!
From the news thread regarding the changes;
Quote:
There's plenty of functional changes planned for the coming months, so keep your eyes open for further announcements. Things such as a
--> SCUK Shop
--> A revamp of the Slope Directory to include World resorts
--> User Galleries
--> Updated Forum functionality
--> Eventually a User Profile of your very own, so you can keep an eye on just the stuff you're interested in.

Input from members of SCUK contributed to the new style of the site, as seen here

What do you think of the new layout people?
I actually really like it, looks all wintery all year round!
Poll coming soon [Poll added]
Awesome!
Feel free to provide feedback and opinions in this thread whether you like the new layout or not, let us know what you think and why
NOTE: We are looking for user submitted headers/banners to display on the top of the new SCUK site, please see linked thread below for more information

Note: Found one lil bug...although not that fussed, on a large monitor atm [1920 x 1200] and it doesnt stretch the whole way across the screen, planned or mishap? Edit: Not a bug - Fixed screen to acomodate for the majority of SCUK users |

That's what "fixed width" means old chap. It's fixed at 1000px wide, which caters for 98% of our users. The other 2% either need a new monitor or glasses
We still need to update the payment page images and a few of the colour schemes we use with Google. We may even make some subtle changes to the forum colours, but I'd rather crack on with the major changes we have planned.
If you do spot any other gaffs or want to rant at how much you hate the new SCUK, then post away. |

i LOVE the new site.
but.
if you fix the screen width. does that mean that as large monitors get cheaper and more people use them they will all end up with acres of whitespace around the info in the middle. or will you then resize the site to cater for the 98%, and then again. when the monitors get bigger again.
was there a technical reason why the site could not use percentages instead of px
i am only using a 17 inch laptop screen but i have an inch of wasted white space down each side |

Nah leave it fixed width its not that bad
I'm on a 24" Monitor thats all, doubt most people are
I quite like it though, i'd say the next feature to try and aim in making live would be the banner @the top - Perhaps make an official thread for people to submit photos to get that underway |

Fixed width controls the layout a bit better, which has many benefits:
On very big screens, news posts where very wide. It looks horrible. Now it won't and as most of the content we generate is news or calendar entries it's important that looks presentable.
On 800px screen, everything folds up.
You can't use percentages really. 80% of 1600px is fine. 80% of 800px isn't.
We certainly keep an eye on how people are using SCUK (Google Analytics is your friend) and sure, when that vast majority are on 1200px or more, we'll change the layout again. I think 1000px is the current "industry" standard for fixed widths.
There is a limit to how big people will want their screens and how small they want their text. I can't personally imagine working on a 32" screen with tiny writing, but some serious gamers have that sort of setup and at hi-res SCUK would have looked like a letter box in the central portion... hence fixed width. |
