I'm now stuck between Meribel and Les Arcs lol. all the comparison websites are too vague and polite.

If you have experience of these two resorts, could you guys compare them for me? main points are beginner/intermediate slopes, freestyle parks, shops/restaurants/nightlife, accommodation, amount of queuing

it would seem from accommodation prices that les arcs is considerably cheaper than meribel, but is there any considerable difference in the overall experience? is there anything about meribel that warrants its higher costs?

Can't help you with Meribel but have been to Les Arcs. 1800 and 2000 are 70's architectural disasters. 1950 is a lot newer and nicer but has that souless purpose built feel that a lot of resorts have. The nightlife was a bit limited but was best in 1800. Don't let me put you off though, the mountain is great. Perfect for the beginner/intermediate rider. Lots of wide blues and easy reds.

Don't forget also that if you buy a Paradiski lift pass you can take the cable car over to La Plagne and ride there also. Better check that thay have fixed it though, as it was out for the whole of last season I think.

I'll definitely go back one day.

Is it just me or is the Eurostar/Snow train the most expensive thing ever?!

As mentioned in another thread, a couple of us took the overnight
Eurostar to Bourg St. Maurice for New Year's 2006. We booked in
August (1st) when the bookings went live, and paid £179 return.

Last year it had gone up to £219 for the same journey at the
same time of year, which was pretty much a 20% rise.

This year it's £269!!! which is another 23% increase.

Absolute pisstake IMO.

Regarding LA or Meribel. Flip a coin. Both have excellent terrain,
and you can eat out for around the same sort of price at either.

Arc1800 at New Year was around 90% French, whereas New Year
in Meribel was around 90% English. Don't know if this makes any
difference to you.

Definitely head to 1800 if you're going to Les Arcs though.
