Arrrr man superpipe is sick, You know it would be wicked if they made an indoor pipe somewhere in the UK, Wink Wink chill factore and snowsport GB.

wink wink...snowsports GB went bust!!!

MK built one a few years back (2004), it took a lot of work and was hard to maintain along with the normal slope operations, be nice to see one again during the summer though

Rode the 22ft one in Breck... it was fairly large, the best thing about a well made pipe is that is it easier to ride than a little one.

I suck bad at pipe, and the MK was a b it like riding a 50p coin. you could feel that it wasn't a smooth transition

That's because they still insisted on piste bashing the middle of it... which got deeper and deeper and deeper. There's always the half-pipe at Sheffield Ski Village of course.

oh yeh snowsport gb went bust, I think it would be great to see a permanent pipe in an indoor dome and would play host to many competitions in the UK i don't know why it hasn't been done yet(permanently), The MK one looked a lil dangerous from that pic it's pretty uneven.
I've just been reading some details on the lack of snowsport funding, Maybe now is a good opportunity to express our ideas. Do you reckon governing people take notice if the demand is high? Wonder if we started a petition somebody would take a shine to it? hmm....

Definately, Bigger pipes are actually quite forgiving if you don't lose your head and keep it together, So with this new boarding governing body in the UK, What changes do you reckon they will make and what will they introduce?

??? it has been done....@MK

it just didn't last because it was high maintennace and freestylers are not the fridges core business.... they come back to us in the summer when the cash cows have gone back to their 9-5's after their week in Val D'isre

oh so do they rebuild it every summer? sweet : )

No they don't re build it every summer, that one was from years ago. What they do all tend to do is be a bit more freestyle friendly between April & September, often keeping a few toys out for use all the time.

Ive rode the superpipe at cooper a week before it hosted the grand prix (olympic qualifers). Its alot harder and scarier than it looks, 30ft walls

If you can keep your head and grow some balls you can get some unbelievable height.

hmm but some of the obstacles are weak like tiny rails and blocks, Bring back the pipe, Anyone been to davos? it's fun park heaven : )

Olympic and X-Games size are 22 ft mate so I doubt it was 30ft... may have felt like it at the top looking down though...

30ft? not a chance son. Copper's early season pipe was 22, for the grand prix. They dont have a 22ft pipe cutter so pretty soon after they had to give it back to Snowmass and go back to 18.

I find a 22ft pipe much easier to ride than an 18 as the tranny is much longer and smoother, so if you eat it at the top, you slide into the middle, rather than slamming onto the flat.

At the minute Brecks pipe is regarded as the best in colorado.

I didn't measure it myself just asked one of the park guys and he said it was a 30 ft pipe, was probally including the jump with that. I didn't rotate out of the lip best I could manage was s couple grabs.

It's the most intense thing in snowboarding I think and you can see why Americans dominate pipe with having so many available to them

i duno man, u wouldn't really compete and be throwing big tricks down on that level unless you were a pro anyway so by then you would be used to it, I don't think it's a mata of how many pipes they got i think it's the support they get and sponsorship etc.
Kat - Mar 09, 2010 - 06:41 PM
Post subject:
Having more pipes will make it more accessible, thereby allowing riders to be better and attract the sponsorship and cash that takes them further. If a rider didn't have a local pipe it's unlikely they'd get hooked up with sponsorship as quickly/easily as someone who has a pipe on their doorstep

not exactly because look at our homegrown star jenny jones, She's queen of slopestyle and i can't say i've seen many big air slopes around the UK, Infact the only consistent US rider to be up there in the medals in pro events is shaun white who to be fair is in a league of his own, But there's other ways to train for example skating and surfing helps some of the fundamentals alot of pro boarders are skaters and tackle big air vert.
It's easier to get sponsorship because it's america, Everything is sponsoring something in america and the market is huge. But i think you give too much credit to the US, all in all they are pretty dissapointing when you think of the opportunities they have over other countries, We whooped canada the rest of europe and US in luge on a track we never even trained on until we got there so the skill is in the beholder not the supplier.

Yeah Jenny Jones had to travel and live in a country with the right conditions and facilities.

I'm with Kat on this one. Your argument does not stand up at all.

the pipe at MK was payed for by MTV for a event they where having. but the price of the up keep etc meant there was an extra charge to ride the pipe.
If i remember the pipe wasn't used that much anwyay.

There just isn't the call for a indoor pipe in the country to make it profitable, and at the end of the day the snowdome; xscape etc are business and have to make a profit.

yeah but i think alot of domes don't have as much support from the governing bodies of the sport to make improvement, You can tell that in terms of quality chill factore is in a league of it's own and will never really fall short in supplying new facilities because they are funded by lottery and the governing bodies, There isn't a huge demand for a pipe no but until a few years ago there wasn't really a demand for domes either it was mostly dry slopes and now domes play a big part in hosting many comps and training etc.

As for the jenny jones thing, yea she moved to another country to follow it up because the facilities are obviously better, But it's all good having the facilities but you've still gota have some skill to beat the best every week, How do you explain us taking gold in the luge then because the luge facilities are practically none existant compared to the facilities for boardin/ski in the uk.

I put most of that down to the fact there is little skill involved... it's all about the start... and we have a start track in Bristol...

Ditto. Riding it nearly every day for a few weeks all I ever managed was about 6ft of air and a 5 on the last hit once. Pipe is nails.

little skill, LITTLE SKILL! I don't even have to say anything about that comment you already know it was stupid, Do i have to remind you what happened on the same track at the olympics.

I know alot of it is your own ability but I'm sure there are some people who have never tried pipe and would be great at it. The pipe isn't for everyone and there's only a handful of pro snowboarders who do well on both the slopestyle and pipe comps. I personelly prefer slopestyle to pipe as it looks more natural and style

meh, I'm pretty certain we won gold in the skeleton bob... I don't think there is a great deal of steering involved in that... other than that good point...

You realize there is more than one type of Luge event?

Amy Williams won Gold for the Women's Skeleton Bob.

I've ridden Superpipes in a number of resorts, the walls are freaking huge, I don't think when you see them on TV that you really see that!

The thing is, you don't often tend to find so many smaller halfpipes about, which are great for learning and getting your confidence for launching out of.

I also remember that Pipe they built at MK. If I remember correctly, you also had to pay extra to use it and it did look somewhat rickety. Nobody was riding it though, probably why they didn't bother again.

I think they are called Ice Sliding sports... and they encompass Luge, Skele and Bob... I think Cresta may try and claim something too...
