Hummm… well it is nearly the New Year, and a time for people to try to sell us *things*, but still - some go to far.

So why not a single thread to report those little bits of SPAM that pop up on the forum to the Mods?!?
After the leftover Crimbo turkey and mince pies, it's what makes us gag the most…

There's a difference between responding to spam and pointing it out so that a Mod can delete it (they can't read everything that people post after all, so if we can help them out, all the better).
Don't forget Sidge, some people might not be completely aux fait with the concept of spam and actually reply to it thinking it's cosher.

It's classic spam - copy a plausible sounding bit of text from another post or website and insert your own links to whatever it is they're selling. In this case some sort of computer course/exam thing.

The IP address that su4321 is logged-in at is registered to Transatel, the company that provides the network for the lefrenchmobil website, so it is indeed SPAM! (which might be appropriate, as su4321 gives their occupation at 'waiter')

If it is, it's unlikely its a UK one - checking the IP address from where the messages come from they're mainly eastern Europe.

For example, recent 'members' AMournThonord, Sweercumuck, Daraswearse, Dydaywamn and sheejoisY are all posting from the same IP address in Germany (109.230.246.148). So it's likely to be the same person. And there are probably loads more like that from other spammers.

No idea why they'd want to spam SCUK so much, but I guess we just keep taking them down.

It's probably a good idea not to click on any of the links in their posts - I think they can get reports saying where people viewing their links have clicked from, which will only encorage them to post on here more. Just ignore them and report the posts.

Stopforumspam really helped me clear out a hellalot of spammers on another site using phpBB years back. I've used plugins, guess that there's one for PNphpBB and Drupal, for it on nearly every site I set up now as it stops most of them even being able to view the site (IP block via db lookup) or register. A combination of that along with reCAPTCHA seems to keep all but the most hardened at bay.

You could be right Pencil - the I.P. address (24.189.68.221) <a href="http://www.snowboardclub.co.uk/PNphpBB2-profile-mode-viewprofile-u-125455.html" target="_blank">TMueller13</a> is posting from is listed as being in 'East Quogue, United States' (near New York) so it's unlikely they could make the freestyle courses at MK they've been talking to people about, and the replies to very old topics seems to suggest they're trying to bump-up their post count.

Edit: I got a message from TMueller13 which said
"don't know what East Quogue is and I've never heard of it but yes I live in New York. My father is from NE England and since he works for (one of the airlines) I am in England all the time - since I was a child. Thanks."
So maybe Mr. TMueller13 escapes the ban hammer this time and just watches what he posts in future...

Not seen the other posts, but banned he is.

I was writing the moderation code for SCUK2 last night. Users will be able to flag posts as abuse/spam and that will send an email to all mods straight away. Once something is flagged three times, we'll hide it from non-mods. Mods will have a page that lists all flagged items allowing them to check and moderate the content. All good. The ban hammer remains with me!
