Abroad - Season in Bansko???

Post subject: Season in Bansko???
Hi folks,
I'm looking into doing my first season and considering heading to Bansko (mainly as I'm skint!)
I'm going it alone as none of my mates are able to commit to the season, but would be open to sharing accomodation. I will be keeping on my job as a website content provider while there so would need somewhere with reliable internet access.
If anyone's interested in joining me feel free to get in touch - im 24 and probably intermediate in terms of skill.
Likewise - if anyone has any tips about where to stay, how much accomodation/lift pass is likely to cost for the season then I'd be interested to hear it.
Cheers,
Chris.

Have you been to Bansko before? It's not that big an area so would be pretty low down my list if I was doing a season to be honest.

Hi Mate - nah, never been before - only been to Les Deux Alpes, Risoul and Alpe Duez on week-long holidays so I'm aware i may have been a bit spoiled.
However, as i have practically zero saved up i have to look to one of the cheaper resorts - even if it means limited terrain.
I've been dying to do a season for years but haven't been able to afford it so unfortunately my hands are tied.
As it's my first season I'm sure I'll have fun anyway - I'll just be grateful to be back on a board.

Post subject: RE: Re: RE: Season in Bansko???
if your serious about improving you riding, the terrain is more than adaquate.
methodsnowschool runs BASI training for and Level 2 courses on this mountain.
just depends what you looking for. if money was no question, we'd all be off to mammouth, whistler or verbier for the season!
and if your serious about spending daddy's money and sampling the delights of challet girls and nannys then maybe here is not a good option either...
Chris_Malone - Oct 13, 2009 - 08:28 AM
Post subject: RE: Re: RE: Season in Bansko???
Well i dont have any of daddy's money, but the challet girls and nannies sound interesting!
Seriously though, I do want to improve my riding and would consider a course or two while I'm out there (money permitting).
Its been a while since i've been on a board and even then i've never spent more than a week at a time in places so feel like I have to leave just as I'm getting somewhere.
I'll have a look at the Method courses and it'd be cool if anyone on here wants to go riding together / teach me freestyle!

look into doing a 2day intor to freestyle camp with definition at one one the uk snowdones b4 you go.
gav runs them and is also sometimes out in bansko during the season.
check them out http://www.definitioncamps.com/Definition.html

I'll be out there this winter doing a lvl2 instructor course. I would definitely recommend Method if your looking to improve your technique.
Can't wait for the winter!

I might give one of their freestyle courses a try if i can spare the cash. Anyone know if gear is cheap to buy out there? I have my own set up but could do with a new board.

I know this might seem like a daft question, but I've been trying to work out what the winter time difference is between Bansko and the UK - do they put their clocks back too? Is it two or three hours ahead in winter? I've looked it up but just get confuzled!

to be honest mate u can prob walk from most places in bansko to the gondola that takes u to the mountains. ive only been once, but it was wicked place but walking around it didnt take long. cheap as chips. chamonix is gonna be a shock this year! we stayed hotel lion and cant recommend it enough. yeh fly to sofia, the transfer is quite long though.
winterfunman - Oct 18, 2009 - 08:10 PM
Post subject: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Season in Bansko???
Motorway from Sofia is now 99% finished so transfer will be shorter / should be ...and as he say you can walk from most hotels plus all hotels have free transfer buses to gondola

Post subject: RE: Re: RE: Re: RE: Season in Bansko???
if u dont stay in a hotel u can always jump on the transfer buses anyway

Hi Cris:D You was asking about the prices of the board equipment.I think here in UK you are going to have lots more to choose from.Prices in BG are higher because there are no sale sale there.BTW if you need accommodation www.hellobansko.com we can make a deal

Transfers from Sofia to Bansko especially from Sofia airport can be £100-£150 both way.If someone is interested in good deal just gimme a shout.I can try to find something.

My place is in the same apartment block as the HelloBansko link above, which is also on the same site as Method. The location is great - literally a 3 min walk from the gondola. You can walk from most hotels, but its uphill!
Awesome place though - always fun. Shame I don't think I'm going to make it out there this year.
stuie - Oct 21, 2009 - 01:58 PM
Post subject: RE: Re: RE: Season in Bansko???
i thought the gondola was downhill from the hotels? certainly the ones i visited/walked past looked at were downhill to the gondola! uphill on the way home!

There are hotels to the left , right , above and below the Gondola , and the HAPPY END pub straight off the gondola ( thou be warned its expensive compared to alot of the other pubs and tend to be where alot of the no staying ppl drink b4 they head home

One for previous seasonaires - What's the best thing to do for cash? I know nationwide used to not charge you for using your debit card in ATMs abroad. Is it best to do that or sort out something else before I go?

It's snowing in Bansko right now!
Hey Chris,
though I had better say Hi to show that us Bansko seasonaires are a friendly bunch! (and the chalet girls are all very attractive!)
If you need any info just ask, but I'll try and answer a few of your questions:
Seasonaire accommodation is really cheap, there are some good deals on offer and you'll be able to get high speed interent for about 10/15 quid a month.
In Sofia, last years boards are on sale untill the beginning of December and they're pretty cheap but obviously there isn't as much choice. If you are after a particular model you would be better getting it in the UK/off the web.
The easiet way to get to Bansko from Sofia is to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station and get the bus to Bansko which costs about 10 quid altogether and is very easy.
Nationwide is a good option or it is easy to set up a bank account over here and transfer a lump sum over so you get a better exchange rate.
Hope that helps and if you want to meet up for a drink when you arrive, let me know.
Chris_Malone - Oct 31, 2009 - 12:43 AM
Post subject:
Sounds awesome Martymun,
I think i've now got accomodation sorted with interweb bundled in so hopefully that all goes smoothly.
As far as boards go, i'm not really fussy - dont have any particular one picked out - just interested to know if i'm gonna get a good deal should I decide to treat myself.
are there decent shops in bansko for such stuff? you say sofia sells them but i've not heard any mention of anywhere in Bansko other than Method.
Good advice about the transfer - I'll be doing that rather than the é65 private jobbies on google.
thinking of setting up an account with nationwide anyway since Lloyds TSB seem to be systematically destroying Halifax!
Should def meet up as well, I dont fancy spending a season alone so the more mates I have out there the better!
martymun - Oct 31, 2009 - 11:47 AM
Post subject:
The boards in bansko aren't as good deals - but there are a few around and method have some really nice K2s in which you can demo no probs.
When are you arriving? I'll ask around to see if anyone is in Sofia then - you might be able to get a lift straight from the airport.

hi guys we have a spare place in our appartment for the season in MAYRHOFEN
we are staying in the gasthoff zillertal all season from 1st dec to 11th april
it's a four person room and there are three of us already.
skiers or snowboarders welcome male or female, ideally a female as there are already 2 guys and 1 girl so would make things even haha.
the place costs 1455 euros for the whole season! super cheap. basically one guy dropped out after paying the deposit and first payment but he said we can keep it as its non refundable to him and for messing us around.
message me guys if your interested as this is bound to go quickly.
cheers ross.

It's a bit naughty but if you do want to sell it later make sure when you get your photo taken you've got a hat on to cover up as much of your face as possible...
The lift pass potos come up in really good quality on a screen inside the lift offices - last year our mate lent his to a friend but they spotted him straightaway and it got confiscated.

McMinn - Natives is a good site for more info on seasons. My situation is a bit different from other folks - I work from home and can continue to do that out here, but most folks get a job wherever they are doing a season or save up enough cash to be ski bums. Depending on your employer the might provide accomodation and sometimes limited lift passes. Otherwise its up to yourself to organise.

Oh the dilema of to book the flights or not, pretty much a gamble.

drink alot of good places , but dont be tempted to just walk in the happy end , even though its straight of the gondola , its expensive , yet it has anice atmosphere etc , but if your wanting to save pennies stay away , chilli bar is good , fortuna/happy pub is close to gondola station and good , jj murphys is well good place to go , can be expensive for guiness etc , try zargorak as it is a local beer and same as carlsberg ..................banski han is a great traditional mehana down bottom end of town , taxi drive really .... agree a price first though and only pay that ....... and remeber when i old style mehanas .....keep ya head still when ordering or answering questions to waitor ..as shaking head ( side ways )means yes and vice versa

The ski road back to town is open, although just now it's a bit sketchy towards the bottom from what i've heard (I've only gone to the middle gondola station as I dont fancy wrecking my board).
Not really sure why the top is closed this week - was open for the first two weeks of the season so I can only imagine they're saving the snow for something (hopefully to get the park built). It has been a bit windy at times but not overly so and not every day so hopefully once the new year crowd leaves it will be back open.

It's on the same street as the Irish pub, about 200m down the hill (past the play park where I enjoy playing on the swings and offering kids sweets) haha.
They also do nice apricot rakia and the hostess woman is the most amazing waitress i've ever had.

The park isnt built yet. there's a box at the bottom of Chalin Valog (allegedly) although I've yet to find it. Hopefully there'll be a powder day when you're out and as winterfunan said, top of the mountain, swing a right and you'll be good!

gondola queue is alot bigger of late as borovets has zero snow , so as bansko has sh1t loads more cannons and natural snow at the o , they are bussing ppl in from borovets , plus there are a large set of greeks and russkis come over too ......... jump in a taxi with a few , agree a price then get driven up to shilingari ...avoid gondola and first chair

Just an update. A bunch of snow fell today in the town and its looking good up the mountain from what I hear. Heading up on the first gondola tm.
Yeah, the gondola has been manic of late due to pamporovno and borovets being shut and Christmas and New Year tourists.
The real problem is the lifts - they've been closing chairs left, right and centre due to high winds so often large parts of the mountain have been inaccessible at the busiest time of the season. I cant wait till the weather gets better and the tourists leave. Still... Powder morning tomorrow so happy days.

Teaching on dryslope is killing me already haha.....
Hoping to have it by the end of 2010!
The performance course is only in the mornings so if anyone wants to ride in the afternoon all good
And as for apres, well bar crawls I would have thought were mandatory!
And I'm not as much of a man eater as WFM makes out....I'm not really that dangerous!

It depends on your riding, if you're at BASI 1 or higher standard then you might not benefit so much from the performance course, but lower than that and you probably will. It'll break your riding right down and rebuild it properly so that by the end you'll be a much better rider (technically) and it'll set you up properly for any other courses (freestyle, off-piste etc.) you you decide to do.
It'll also make you more critical of others - you'll happily start pointing out the failings of others as you're watching them while you're on the chairlifts

Thinking about coming out for the "Snowboard Coach Week" performance course 20th-28th March, just got to sort out the cash. I got my BASI1 with Ash about a year ago and have been teaching on dendix since, trouble is with constantly teaching beginners I feel that I've become a master of side slipping but my general riding has suffered a bit,or maybe I've just hit a plateau, anyway want to get that back on track and move forward again. Can totally recommend the performance courses, did one at MK before doing my BASI and it really sorted my riding out.

At least you can ride the dendix, I teach on it and I can hardly turn on it....bad times!
I'm sure whatever level you will get stuff out of the course you can always improve your riding. I am BASI1 and am OK on snow, but I still think I will get a lot out of the course

Took me a while to be honest, it really sorts out your technique. When I first approched the slope about some part time work they said fine but come down for a few sessions to get the hang of it, my first 6 hours were nightmare.....couldn't turn spent a lot of time on my a**e. Dont worry it'll come good with more time on it. Coaching from Ash and the team will help tons as well.
Meant to be teaching tomorrow, the slope will be lovely covered in snow really looking forward to having a ride on it but irony is because of the snow/ice not sure I can get there.
Let me know how you get on. Just emailed Ash to say I def want to come so hopeful there are still places on the end of March course.

I learned on Dendix and I reckon its the best to learn on as you have to have your technique sorted or you will stack every time. As soon as I got on snow I was like ""Oh! Im in Heaven!

Snap, I also learnt on the diamond death but then gave up riding it in favour of the white stuff.
Most of the teaching is on snowflex and that is ok, I can turn on that!....but the main slope at Sheffield is dendix so occasionally I have to do lessons on there usually sideslipping down myself... telling other people how to turn on it when I can't haha

haha, good one. i'd gone missing as i've been too busy shredding/drinking to come online. back at work now for a few days so wasting more time on here. it's not snowed properly for the past three or four days but the town's getting a very light dusting just now so hopefully that continues all night and the mountain gets dumped on like a cheap ho!
I'm also off work next week so dont be expecting updates haha. have to make the most of it! banskoski.com is a good bet for the webcams and you can also use this really handy web app called google to find snow reports! haha

Hi all
snow was a little sticky and slower today, but soft so that was cool
Staying in the lion, had some rain this afternoon assoon as you hit the ski road home, quite light rain but it carried on for a while, stopped now
managed to board the ski road all the way down without having to unstrap and skate though so its still pretty good
snows nice and soft which is cool, could do with a cold night though imo, doesnt look like it'll be tonight.
a couple of patches on some runs, red 8 and 1 or 2 others but nothing bad at all
Had a great 2 days so far!! and saw man utd win the cup in the friendly pub while having a great pizza so happy days
sorry only a quick update but so far its been really good and no real problems with snow cover, still plenty to get about on and easy to cut through as its soft
runs 3 and 11 at the top closed today due to high winds

lol thought I may aswell copy and paste for everyone!
Nightmare yesterday though!!! Mountain Rescue job, otherhalf was on a private group lesson of 4 ppl and coming down the end of blue 5 I think it was where it joins to another run, a bulgarian boarder came flying down a red out of control and instead of turning just leant back so the nose of his board came up and he lost control.
Went crashing straight into my otherhalf, I was on another slope but apparently she rolled 3 times and somehow her foot came out of her snowboard boot.... it was just left in the binding. Really weird as her boot was done up very tightly aswell.
Instructor called mountain rescue and for some reason the rest of the group let the bloke who caused the accident go........ I got there a few minutes later and was far from happy that they hadnt kept hold of him
Mountain rescue got her on a skidoo and took her to the gondola where I then went down to the medical centre with her, 2 quick x-rays confirmed no breaks and just a sprained ankle.
Rang my insurance – Lloyds bank who do it through Axa, they were helpful and it meant I just had to pay the excess on the policy of £40 to the Bulgarian medical centre.
Just aswell we had insurance as the skidoo ride alone would have cost £200 nevermind the rest,
She’s had a rest today and stuck with R.I.C.E. now has a nice bruise in a weird line on the side of her foot.

you're not far wrong, saw some nasty 'accidents' if you could call them that today aswell, people cutting others up and just not giving way! just aswell the bulgarian guy wasn't around when I got to the scene of the accident really
saw one young girl go over on her ski's, no-one hit her but she was crying and no1 even bothered to stop, she must have been about 8 and from the lift we just saw people carry on past her
On the plus side here's some of todays pics
clear sky at the top but you can see the cloud below covering all of the town

No wind today so got some good shots at the top

Did the ski road early at midday so I could meet the otherhalf for lunch as she had a days rest after the accident, pic taken half way down the ski road near the cheap bar
