Any one got any early dreams, to go, I should have gone this year but funds were running low so i had to cancell my visa
, so I am going next year if this pesky down turn dos'nt get in the way and take all the lift work... or the up coming olympics dos'nt sap the accomodation.
All i want to do is chill, board, party, work the lifts and earn enough to support the lifestyle..
I am but a simple man...

I might now be going in 09/10 as ive sorted my college out by pulling my finger out my arse and working hard so that i dont have to do an extra year. Whistler is on my list of possible resorts but with the olympics going to be on im not sure.

Oh bugger...
I'd always assumed that the olympics, was the other end of the year.. I just looked it up feb march
I like the winter olympics, and I defo get some beers to watch it on the telly, but being there with all those people. nah not for me...
OK... that kind of changes things for me.....
I want enough Lift work, but i don't want too much... if yoal know what i mean.
so I guess whistlers not the place to chill out for me that i had hoped.
better start another thread..

i will be there im hoping. Providing i can arrange accom way before hand i would go during the olympics. It will be alot busier but alot of the people wont be using the mountain they will be technical and production staff so although town will be much busier the slopes wont be overrun.
Plus alot of the staff will be based in vancover rather than whistler

The municipality of Whistler are expecting visitor numbers to be quite a way down during the Olympic year. Except for the month the games are on it shouldn't be any worse than normal and even then don't be surprised if for the most part the slopes are empty. I wouldn't rule it out just because the Olympics are on, everyone else is doing the same thing. If you can guarantee a job and accommodation with the mountain before you go then you'll be fine. The main difficulty will be for people without staff accommodation as the private sector of the housing market will be very strained.

I was going to apply for a lift job for this years season, for the London interview... it turned out that before you could go for an interview, I had to join CCUSA which was going to cost me around £200... which at the time it wasn’t mentioned on the Whistlerblkcmb site, it was only once I'd filled in the Membership form that I found that out on the CCusa site.. Rip off.
I know that ccusa offer many other discounted services, once you’re a member but I was already a member of Bunac, and they were cheaper, but did'nt have a partnership with whistler..
I don't know what the story is for over seas recruitment for 09/10 yet.
I still love to have the Lift job lined up before i get there... just be one less thing to worry about...
I was always going to take staff accommodation, as I want a hassle free season, even if it’s a bit more expensive.
I have edited this post because I had another look at the email I was sent and realized that it was the wrong company I was slaging off...

AFAIK OWH is for Aussies and Kiwis... I don't think us brits can join it, you sure you got that right about OWH? As its pointless for them to hold a job fair in the UK if you cant be a member of OWH.

Getting jobs for next season wont be the issue, but as always housing is, most hotels are booked up now, most seasonal accommodation is getting booked or putting rates up, monthly zoned places are charging a fortune for the olympic months(the place im renting is charging $30k for the month of Feb) and nightly rental zoned places will be charging at least $500 a night. Trust me, I've been scouring the rental market for the last few months and either places are available long term (minus the games) or charge daft amounts for the games periods, some owners/landlords are shipping their tenants out of town for the games which works for some people but not for me.
Not trying to put people off because the hills may be quiet and there will be tons of work going as the seasonal resident who typically fill these jobs wont have anywhere to live. If your thinking of coming and not working I think you will find it quite hard to get accommodation.

Get in early and get a job CONFIRMED with the mountain BEFORE you leave. I know people who got into HOUSE and were then unable to get a full time job with the mountain due to a good 90% of the jobs being dished out at the job fairs in Czech , NZ and Austalia during he summer. This meant they had to move out of HOUSE and try and find accomodation elsewhere...

Revelstoke season passes are only $589 if you buy before 30th June, thats just over £300! Haven't been myself, I hear there isn't that much of a town but the hill is awesome.
In Whistler you will find it pretty hard to get accommodation sorted unless you are out here to ring people, go and see places etc. If you really want to come I'd book into the hostel for 2-3 weeks at the start of the season and start pounding the pavements. I would have thought that it will be possible to get somewhere sorted to stay if you try hard enough.

When I worked in Whistler as a liftie, it was four days on, three days off. Unless of course this has changed. They don't really tend to take on people to do less than those hours, so it's not like instructing or something where you can decide on hours.
Most of the mountain work jobs are pretty good for having a few days riding, and being able to affoard to live. Everyone who I knew who worked for local buisnesses or hotels seemed to get a lot less free time. The best are obviously night work jobs, such as bar work where you could ride everyday, but these only go to long time locals or pretty girls.
It's really a bit of an odd one as to what 09/10 season is going to be like, as it will be insanely busy at the Olympics time.

cool, good luck.
to be honest, sending random resumes to businesses by email/post are 0.001% effective, you will have a slim chance of getting a lead that way.
Call some places in advance in the daytime PST. They will still tell you to come in and see them when you get here if they are interested.
You best bet is to arrive early, and walk round ask for managers and ask for a job.
This year will be interesting for workers as there will be high demand for seasonal workers as a lot of locals will be leaving town feb and a lot of seasonal workers wont have a usual availability of housing.

Post subject: worldy advice please...
Hey Jguys, wondering if you can throw some of that good advice this way...
Firstly I’m really set on being in whistler this coming season, however am harboring the common concerns re housing and work. Actually not so worried about work, mainly the accom. I’ve looked into some of the organised house set ups and can get a place in a house – shared room for $7250 for the season in Alpine way(15th nov-april). Is this a massive rip-off? I expect to have to rough it a bit, but for the most part I’d like to live of my wages using savings occasionally, but at this rate with a standard mountain job, I’ll struggle just to cover the cost of rent.
Secondly I have no concerns about getting a Canadian visa (pretty much just a stamp these days for us Aussies) however I’ve had to renew my passport before being able to apply so feasibly wont get that through for 5-8 weeks from now. Am I wasting my time applying for jobs before it comes through – even if its pretty much a given?
So in summary the main question is should I take this pricey house and suck it up, or wing it.
ScottDrummer - Jul 30, 2009 - 04:59 AM
Post subject: RE: worldy advice please...
thats around 1600 a month, which for a shared house is pricy unless its a very nice big house with utilities included. But if you dont have much to choose from I would take this up if you can afford it.
Do some shopping around, call landlords and hassle people, its a landlords market atm, but don't wait too long as its only going to get harder.
Don't underestimate how much you will spend here during a season, when there's parties, apre, new gear tempting you, loss/damage, insurance, beer, food(can be done inexpensively if you shop wisely) and beer. You may want/need more than one PT job, it depends on the jobs. Restaurant servers, bell boys, hotel service are a few good areas to look for to earn.
With work, yeah pretty much wasting your time sending emails until you get here for most seasonal jobs. Get here early, get in line and make an impression, good experience is a huge benefit also.
Some restaurants (if thats the field you are aiming at) are being bought out during Feb, some will retain staff some wont, so having a backup job elsewhere is a good idea.
If your not working for the mountain, I recommend buying an early bird season pass, you save $$$'s. There are rumors this year that there will be significant discounts on season passes, due to be announced soon. The vancouver hills have done this so may also be there case here.

Post subject: RE: worldy advice please...
there seems to have some issues with finding a place to stay in whistler this year for the winter because of the olympics...
Discount is only for cypress as they olympics will be there but Grouse and seymour didn't benefit from one.
I will live in Vancouver and just hit the place for riding when there is good snow.

My job is actually selling the passes for WB!
My advice is buy the seasons pass at early bird pricing (before Oct 12th) and you save >$400, then if you end up getting a Whistler Blackcomb job they will refund you (if they're being tight they may charge you a $25 admin fee, but ask nicely and they'll waive it).
There is no refund once you have used the pass (even if you only rode 1 day) UNLESS you have a good reason accompanied by proof i.e. a doctors note.
Check out the bonus pack as well if you are going for the season - for $429 you get a $500 gift card for WB (never expires, can be used for any WB product... all food on mountain, equipment, lift tickets for your freinds, skischool, etc.) and 3 adult lift tickets. You are only allowed to purchase one if you buy before Oct 12th and don't work for mountain (boo for me).

sorry can u use the early pass or not? If then applying for a whistler Job do they refund it or not... confused.
I have a friend out there who worked for the castle 2 seasons ago and is back hoping to do same thing.. Ive emailed but need to pester more for jobs
keltie - Sep 29, 2009 - 12:00 AM
Post subject: RE: Re: RE: worldy advice please...
The "early pass" is actually the same product as the unlimted seasons pass... you just get a discount for buying it early. So you can use it as soon as the mountain opens (provisionally Nov 26th, come on snow!).
However, once you have used it, getting a refund is tricky, so if you plan on trying to get a job from Whistler Blackcomb then I would buy the pass before Oct 12th anyway (incase you don't get a WB job which comes with a free pass) and not use it until you know where you will be working. But you should know that a week or so after arriving and are unluckly to miss out on any riding days anyway.
It could save you alot of money, and if not, think of it as a savings/currency converting scheme!

You two would be great contributors to the site having here for a while, basically i have created a site which should launch nov1st its a central source of info for visitors and locals, it has restaurant reviews, free classifieds, event list and local news, not the sort of news pique covers, more like a blog style, hopefully with rumours, local happenings etc... Its going to be a huge project.
As we have event coverage we need someone to go to events and report back what it was like, photos if poss etc..., we have a guy who is a photographer doing this but more help would be good. We also need a good source to provide rumours and news. Whenever we get vip passes to events or free entry we are passing these on to contributors so that they get in, and report back to the site of the event.
Its kinda tourism based but also good for locals. It will make more sense when its up and running but if your interested itd be great to have your info published.

Good luck with it Scott, if you need someone to review the entire menu at Splitz then I'm willing to help!

Hey Johnny, Lez, yeah its going to be a weird one. Summer was awesome but seemed to fly by.

If any onf you are looking for Insurance for the season try Whistler Insurance Shope. (thats how its spelt). I went out with poor insurance and got new cover with them out there (when I saw one of my mates bills). I thought it was real good value, cant remember how much exactly but it covered everything from park to off piste, backcountry, heliskiing and no stipulations about guides, equipment ect.
Had to make a claim and the lady in the shop was so helpful, a real advantage to going with a local broker is there is some there to help you when things go wrong. Was zero stress and got paid back with in 3 weeks. It was a travel insurance policy so if your heading over I thing you should be able to sort it out before you leave. Google the name and I am sure you will get the place.
I just wnated to say this hear to help out a the little person that gives a good service!

DG - Oct 28, 2009 - 09:38 AM

I think so, I cant remember there being anything about a policy limit. They will also extend a policy while you out there. e.g. I hadnt got enough cash to pay for the full 5 months at first so I just paid for the 3 and then extended the policy later. There was some exclusion based on that though that your not covered if you re injure something that you claimed on from the original policy.

Any chance someone could check out the prices of some Ride boards for me? I need to see if they are going to cheaper at home now the exchange rate is getting hammered yet further. I'm after either a DH, DH2 or Machette. Am not 100% convinced about all this rocker tech on some of them and would rather test a board on the mountain rather than on a 150m snowdome slope.
Preferably in Showcase if they sell them as I think I can get 20% off in there in Jan with the pass discount.
Cheers.

if your heading out totally worth buying there still. have a look at trusnow.com, can buy from the US and postage includes all customs duties, if you can hold out til feb then they have done 40% off retail for last two years. got a dh from them for $350 including postage back in 2008!
even in resort can get for $450 easily which is still less than £300 however bad the exchange rate gets.
also try and ask around youl find people selling off pro's gear for serious mark down. might not be able to get much Ride stuff but definately rome and burton stuff atleast 50% of rrp.
happy hunting!

Maybe they have improved? think about how long spilts have been around, not very long and in the last 2 years massive strides have been made, mainly in the area of bindings, the new sparks fuse is super light and connects straight to the slider pucks.
Previously there was a slider plate attached to your normal binding which added weight.
http://www.sparkrandd.com/products/fuse/
And the new Prior AMF is the dog's bollox, won backcountry magazine award this year, they have brought in reversed camber into all mountain true twin,so gone are the days of 177 swallow tails and skin tight closet skier splitboarders, now the bros are in the backcountry!!
http://priorsnowboards.com/boards_amf_splitboard.php
Oh and spoke to a woman tonight who has worked on mountain for 22 years and she said they will find out this Tuesday whether they will open the following weekend or not, they plan to open Blackcomb 1st,just Jersey Cream maybe

Yeah i just don't want to be stuck in a Que half the day, might head over towards Harmony, then can ride out to bottom of Emerald.
Will we be able to ride to base or have to download on Gondola? that would suck, should have been enough snow this evening to do it
lez_s - Nov 11, 2009 - 11:20 AM

You'll be downloading as there is no snow in the village yet, and you'll be downloading from the roundhouse. If you do try and go to mid station make sure you are on your rock board.
At the start of last season I was jumping over ditches and rocks from Emerald down to mid station, but last season had crap snow.
One other thing, Harmony might not be hard work as there will be a lot of rocks that aren't covered by a lot of snow.

There are a few options you have on openng day, if you are there early enough you can get a good 6 or so laps in before a crowd even forms at the lift this is best used to rip red and green chair where they havnt groomed it. Depending on avi patrol you might not even be able to hike into harmony, they will have it blocked off at the top of green, with pass revoked. Also it is an incredibly dangerous time of year to be ripping in areas you are unfamiliar with, there will be countless sharks waiting just under the snow to take a chunk out of you. Although harmony will look good there will rocks just under the snow that take a bit longer to fill in and hitting one of those at 40k/h will be good bye knee. A huge factor of what im going to ride on opening day is a result of knowing what the mountain looks like in summer, areas that will not have any underlying rocks, where the run is made of gravel almost, or an area which remains mostly glacier in summer. These sections do not require as much snow to be shreddable, and the chance of hitting anything is greatly reduced.

Sweet, wel i'm 1 of those over keen guys who could well say goodbye to my knee,i'm lucky i have a couple of Canadian buds who have been here for 10 years+ so i'm sure they know where to go,as you said it's all about wind loading and finding those spots holding plenty of snow

Yeah for sure they will know, Flute is a good option, not really rocky it consists mainly of shale, especally on the shoulder. Whistler bowl and shale slope will ge great, the saddle too. Anything further along the ridge is a bit uncertain, and once you get there it could be a long horrible way down. Flute would be a bit more effort than peak because its so far out, and will have a hike out at the end.
Riding to midstation should be fine on a rock board, watch out for service roads still in use. Yeah there is nothing worse than having to download.

You have to remember that whistler is a worldwide tourist destination, from pros to never evers. Baker is not. Whistler accommodates everyone from the average joe beginner to the seasoned veteren. They need to make sure that all terrain that is open is safe, if it was left for people with transceivers and probes, they would go out of business.

4 awesome days riding, rediculous amounts of snow.
I tested the snowpark across at harmony today and there is a definate weak spot maybe a foot and a half deep with heavier snow on top. I wouldnt be going too far out of bounds without all the gear or even at all.
Hope everyone is having a blast

It is just a bit unstable now beause we got so much snow so quicky and its a bit heavier than what is underneah. In the long run once it all settles and packs down its going to be a great base. Way better than last year.

Love the comment about sinking to your armpits on the avi advisory!
The intense storm that hammered our region with high winds and heavy snowfall over the past several days has now abated. A total of 142 cm of snow fell since Sunday morning. In any wind loaded areas the foot penetration is up to your armpits, with ski penetration to your waist resulting in major wallowing in gentle terrain. Winds were gusting to 120kph at and below the treeline last night, uprooting hundreds of trees adding to the heinous travel conditions. Best to stay inbounds until after the next storm cycle passes and the storm snow layers have had a chance to settle a bit.

Me,Wilkez,LeeLau and Sharon spent 3 days at Keiths Hut in Cerise Creek 26-28th Dec during a High Pressure and a funky inversion, snow was still fun and pack was stable,Wind hammered up high 2000m,rode Anniversary GI,Matier Ridge Couloir and alot around Vantage Ridge.
Keith's Hut:
Going up Anniversary Glacier Col:
Top of Col,Wind hammered, great opertunity to swing the ice axe around:
Top of Col 2500m:
Day 2,Better snow around Vantage Ridge
Vantage Ridge looking at Matier Peak 2800m and Twin One GI's
Off the back of Vantage Ridge
Loving the mid winter low sun angles:

Hi Guys, I'm after a bit of whistler advise! Me and my boyfriend are thinking about doing a working season in whistler this year - we've worked in vancouver before (a couple of years ago now). We're quite new at snowboarding and figure the best way to progress is to get out there!
It might be a bit of a long shot but we'd like to keep working on our career paths as much as possible if we can (inevitably we will need to accompany this with bar work etc and volunteer work for our passes!)
I've seen jobs advertised in europe whereby chalet/hotel owners employ web developers to maintain/build their websites (and in some cases some housekeeping is involved) in return for accommodation - I'm a web developer (currently working for an e-commerce company) and would really like to find some work along these lines, but I wouldn't know where/how to find it!
My boyfriend is a cameraman/editor and whilst work along these lines may be harder to find any suggestions would be appreciated.
By the way, also ready your seasonaire tips! V useful!!
Thanks!!
Zoe

I've seen jobs advertised in europe whereby chalet/hotel owners employ web developers to maintain/build their websites (and in some cases some housekeeping is involved) in return for accommodation - I'm a web developer (currently working for an e-commerce company) and would really like to find some work along these lines, but I wouldn't know where/how to find it!
My boyfriend is a cameraman/editor and whilst work along these lines may be harder to find any suggestions would be appreciated.
By the way, also ready your seasonaire tips! V useful!!
Thanks!!
Zoe
Sorry to say but I think you are going to struggle especially your BF, there are quite a lot of people into that sort of thing out here.
Your best bet is to come out and get jobs in the resort doing bar / service work and offer to work for people for free, try to build up a rep and some contacts and do it that way but it will take some time.
I would imagine your best bet would be to work in Vancouver and come up at the weekend.

Resort TV would be one place to try for cameraman work, and WhistlerCreekProductions, although they are small and work may not be consistent, There are lots of media companies sprouting up at the moment but they are all indie small companies. If your coming soon the Olympics may be an option for camera work but that will be temporary.
As Moo says retail/bar/service may be a good option to start with to maintain income and then branch out to find other work.
Web is funny here, there isn't really a huge requirement for web devs and most businesses hire freelancers or a big name from the city depending on their level of puzzeledness.
There are web devs in Whistler but again they are freelance and its pretty saturated.

how much money do you get through for food/drink in a whole season? Im looking to go next season and will be self catering. I know everyone says it is only as expensive as you make it, but a rough estimate?
Scott, I read on your guide (v helpful btw) that I want to organise my accom. early. I dont want to fork out extra cash to seasonaires/season it for doing something that I could do, but I need to work until the end of october to pay for it... and so i cant get there in sept like you suggest. It is worth emailing an estate agent out there to see what they can do in the summer? the same goes for finding work in the resort.

Id say at least $3000 CAD for 6 months for groceries for a couple, but as you know its subjective it depends if your a good cook, like to eat out a lot, can shop well, if you have transport you can get to squamish to save a few $.
Estate agents don't really have much in the way of rentals. I went to an estate agent this year to find a rental and they were pretty useless. The properties that were shown were not good at all. Saying that next year could be a completely different story on the rental market, best to look in pique, question and hammer the owners that are renting their properties. They favour long term rentals so make sure you explain how long you are intending to stay.
Beware of scams, don't sent any money wired, and speak with the owners/agents over the phone if possible.
Its hard work to find accommodation from the UK, but next year could be different, and im guessing rental rates will drop due to availability,
I would recommend either seasonit or seasonaires for an easy solution.

cheers.
Was really temped by season it. I couldnt understand their pricing, whether the price was for 1 person sharing a room, or for 2 ppl in the room...
buuut, you have to be 19 to stay in any of their places, which rules that out (Ill be 19 in feb 2011).
$3000 sounds ok for two.
so the best bet sounds like talking to season it/seasonaires, or getting on pique in the summer? does it help to look for accom in twos? I have a friend who is wants to go for the season...

cheapest on natives is $7k for 6 months!

forget natives, they seem to only want to promote Europe, virtually a crystal only promoter, great for euro useless for North America.
Not sure what you mean by twos? if you are sharing with a mate then you could look for a shared house, if your a couple the same applies but also opens up to 1 bed properties also.

yeah just sharing with a mate.

Carefull with seasonairres.... If u book then back out u have to (supposedly) pay a certain amount to them depending on timescales. THIS IS NOT YOUR DEPOSIT.
but a deposit should be exactly that...a deposit to cover if u back out u loose it.
READ the terms first. U could easily book within the time to pay %60 back if u cancel but it does not get highlighted. So either way your screwed..if they can get the money out of you.
anyway your not missing much its pi55ed down for 2 days...............
Far more cheaper places about but u just gotta get into the system early, i pay £400 a month to share a good room in a good condo with hot tub, fire and space to relax etc. Consider u could go white gold and pay £1000 a month it makes u think..........
Earlyness is the key. Get a job start meeting people things become available. I know a guy who rocked up here with no job and no house.... on Dec 3rd. He has sorted himself out with a job and a nice house for not bad money u just got to give the effort. Hes happy as now its good to see.

Hi,
Having just got back from a week in Bulgaria, it is now time to get excited about Whistler again, hurrah. We are out there for March this time.
Having been riding a mountain with no parks, I can't wait to scare myself all over again!
How has it been with the Olympic buildup?

Stu - watch out for that up down box in Whistler park, it gives you a big headache haha
Hope everyone is having a good one out there. I'm SO gutted to be missing out this season with the snow your having, but small loss for the big gain if it all works out - fingers crossed.
I've already started looking for condos for this coming season and I'm saving hard so I can try and get a two week trip to AK mid season.

Stu - I've got 2 spare fresh tracks tickets that I didn't manage to use when we were over earlier in Jan. Only want £10 as Scott got me them on 2 for 1.
Looked like I just missed an epic storm the other week('
