Snowboard Club UK FAQs (frequently-asked questions)

Category: Main -> Competitive Riding -> British Teams/ Squads

Question

Answer

How do I try out for the British Team?

Snowsport GB manage the British Snowboard Team and Squads, therefore all the information on selection policies and training can be found through them.
A few tips:
• Attend as many British Competitions as you can, preferably sanctioned by Snowsport GB.

• Attend the British Championships, Contact Snowsport GB regarding any training camps or the summer selection camp.

• Attend FIS competitions, you can find details of these on www.fis-ski.com/calendar. These are looked highly upon and FIS points are taken into account.

• GET FIT – Not only do you get tested on you snowboard skills but you also get tested on your general fitness. It is vital to be strong and flexible to be a super athlete.

• You must be prepared to spend 8 – 10 months of the year travelling / competing / training with the team.

• The costs for the team are very high; to have sponsors, savings or parents at the ready would be a good idea.

Is there any support from the governing body or Government for talented snowboarders?

Snowsport GB is a non-profit organisation which supports and manages the British Teams. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of Government funding money is allocated to snowboarding. Money can also be sourced from Lottery funding, and members of the British Team or a Home Nation team (England/Scotland/Wales/N.Ireland) are the most likely recipients.

Riders are genrally supported by sponsors, read more about that in our getting sponsored section.

The other options would be to look to your county council or school for funding. Personal sponsorship is recommended if you are planning to travel the world entering competitions as this a very financially demanding sport at the top level.

What should I expect at a Team Captains/ Riders meeting at events?

These take place in the afternoon or evening before the competition to determine the programme and start list. There should be no more than two people at the Team Captain’s meeting to represent the whole GBR entry at FIS events.

You should make every effort to have a presence at the meeting; Organisers do have the right to remove competitors from the board who are not represented. Your attendance will hopefully prevent any such disaster occurring. Please ensure you arrive at least 30 minutes before these meetings begin. If you are unavoidably detained en route, it is vital that you phone the organiser’s office to confirm your participation (numbers are listed on the FIS calendar).
